Hey Simon,

I thought I'd make a landsailer somewhat like yours. I thought I'd get some longboard skate trucks and bolt an axle underneath like you did. I just thought I better ask you what you've learned about it.
First the trucks - did you use longboard trucks or standard trucks? Do you think stiffer rubbers are the go? Did you find that yours turns OK, not too tight, not too stiff?

I got some steel/pneumatic wheels with spigot bearings about 220 diameter from Super Cheap Auto. They are attached to a couple of trolleys they were selling for $20 each. God knows how they can sell them for that. They have a couple of 12mm axles about 450 long. I don't suppose they need to be that long. How long do you think is necessary to avoid interference between the deck and the wheels?

For a deck I guess I'll have to find something. If I can't I'll buy some structural ply.
I guess the deck should be about 1200 long maybe 220 wide. I'd like to be able to step around the front so I guess the mast foot should be about 150 to 200 from the nose. The front axle should be long enough so I can step there without touching the wheels. Hmm... maybe 450 isn't too long.
If that's the case then I doubt that a 12mm axle will span without bending when centre loaded like that. I guess I could find a piece of tube to sleeve over the axle and araldite together. Its beginning to sound quite heavy.

Anyway, do you you have any tips to offer?

Hi David,
just came back from kingscliff. was not enough wind to go out there. Was greate yesterday at narrowneck until i broke my mast pretty far out there.
To the landsailer: I used normal cheap skateboard trucks, made a little groove with a file and used some u bolts (25mm) to connect it to the axles. The ones of supercheap are perfect. dont shorten them, you have much better control with wider axles. Screwed the trucks about 15cm from each end on the board (dont know why so far, is maybe better to put them right on the edge).
The deck is an old wakeboard, 140cm long (that is a good length to stand stable and comfotable on it) at the ends it is 25cm wide and goes up to 40cm in the middle. i drilled a hole about 10cm forward from the front axle for the mast base. makes it verry hard to tack (but still possible with wavesail). if you make the board to small or put the mastbase to far back you will sail a bit cramped and not as efficient. you can make holes for the mast base in different positions to find out what suits your style.
To get a good grip on the deck i have sprayed some clear paint ($2.50 per can) on the deck and sprinkled some sand of the beach on it before i gave it a second coate of clear paint. works excellent. did that before on my sailboard.
Put some old footstraps on it and with a bit of wind you will have a greate time. Just dont fall.

Thanks for the tips. Bummer about the mast.
Yeah that is interesting. I suppose it could be a lot like sailing having no directional constraint at the front - something to think about.

You guys heard of a modern technological device called a telephone. You can actually talk real time with each other in private. It is awesome.

You needed to invite people's opinions to have a forum discussion. Seems that you were after a reply from one person only and that is a two way conversation. Not really a forum subject eh? Anyway, continue on with your off topic topic ramblings.

Hey Guys,
Great tips. I just bought some wheels at super cheap and will upgrade the golf buggy ones I have on my ls now. One keeps coming off every now and then.. Backloop, have you got some picks of yours, I like the sound of your wake board idea.
Cheers,
Chris
PS
To drive this development I think that we should start uploading our GPS speeds I still have all my downhill mtb gear...

I made one out of a skateboard once.
Just make a hole behind the front truck to attach the base plate and away you go.
You get a bit of a speed wobble at 40knots.
