I am looking for small sails to rig up some older gear so that I can teach my kids to windsurf this summer.
I need enough gear to make up to 3 windsurfers so that I can teach up to 7 kids windsurfer over the summer break.
Any advice is most welcome as I am new to windsurfing (have had some lessons to learn some basics that i hope will be able to pass on) and new to WA and think it is an ideal opportunity to introduce my kids to the sport.
Thanks for any helpful posts in advance

I bought a 2.0m Starboard sail and cut down a mast to suit. For 10yo or younger it might be OK on a wide board with centreboard like a START. I found on the GO that the lack of centreboard meant it basically couldn't be tacked, so I had to use a wave ski and tow the board and pupil back to start, taking twoce their sailing time.
Now my kids are bigger and I make them use a 4.0m sail for learning.
I forgot to see where you are, but its worth noting that the hire at Pelican Point would last year let you have a START plus 2.0 sail for $10 per hour, a brilliant bargain for teaching kids!
You an also buy my 2.0 sail and short mast for $50 if you want. PM if so.

Hi leoha,
we just got back from maui, it was flat for most of the time so I got our 9yr old a 3.5mtr neil pryde "one" rig. In 5 days he went from not being able to up haul thru to waterstarting, planing and footstraps by the last day. He was even holding it down on days when the women were on 4.2's.
The new generation of kids sails are amazing, they feel like a proper sail, light and really stable in their hands. The np sail came with its own mast, boom, base, all sized for little hands. He loved it. Well worth the money considering it performs well enough so he can use it all the way thru learning and into the waves.
One word of advise, dont get a reaal small sail thinking it will be easier for them. We got him a 1.8 sail from another company last time and although it was easier to uphaul, once he got it up there was no stability which we found was actually harder for him to use.
When your looking around make sure the sail has a proper profile not dead flat and "twithy" like some of them tend t be.
Ps another bonus was that it was great to teach my wife on as well so I didnt have to rig 3 sails haha

Any stockists of the Niel Pryde one rig in AUS or similar high quality rig. Looking for something for a 10 year old.

Your best bet is to contact you local Neil Pryde stockist. If they dont have one they can order it in. Definately worth doing. Our little one is 9yr old and about 40kg and hes on a 3.5m if that helps as a reference point. Dont get it too small as we found it easier if hes got something a bit more stable in his hands ( doesnt fall backwards as often which was a problem with the previous brand we tried ) plus youll get more value out of it (just like buying shoes )
Another idea to make it more fun was to teach them on a board thats big enough to ride together, that way when you seeing they are getting abit frustrated or tired you can take them for rip riding the nose or in between your arms ( keeps it fun). Itook alex out to the reefs at kanaha and got a few waves and showed him the turtles, he loved it!! then by the time you get back they're ready to go by themselves again.

If your 5 yr old is anything like ours, they have the attention span of a pea, so you gotta make it fun for them! Alex was that age when we got his first rig. I was stoked when I saw the rig in the shop, it was just like a scaled down 4.7, I got all excited and got it. After a while of trying to teach him I realised that a 4.7 that has been scaled down to a 1.8 actually doesnt work ( too twitchy and unstable ) and its been stuck up on his wall like a poster ever since!
This NP One is way better, its got a decent boom on it and it feels stable like a normal wave sail. They come with the the whole rig ( boom, mast ect ) and its all super easy for them to rig, the only thing I needed to do was put a bit more downhaul on when he wasnt looking, but other than that he can rig it all himself. And to put the icing on the cake he even offered to derig my sail for me a couple of times now that he " knows what hes doing"
futures looking bright! haha

I taught my older boys to windsurf by getting them to kneel on a 150 litre board while I got it going. Usually by uphauling, they would then stand up inside of me and we would sail along. Eventually I could peel off backwards and let them sail alone. For my youngest (11 years younger) I think that I will get either a Neil Pryde or I just saw a Severne Rig on the Severne website. 3.5metre size sounds good. I agree with the small size flat sheet as I personally believe that if an expert couldn't sail with it how can you expect a beginner and kid at that to.
Nothing irritates me more than trying to get learners to use crap equipment.

Maybe think about Hot Sails Maui aswell. www.hotsailsmaui.com
They have 2 dedicated sail ranges for kids ranging from 0.8 to 3.2m. They are basically a "micro" version of what you or i would use, but they are designed especially kids, they aren't a cut down version of a bigger sail as such. They also have all the rig components (boom, mast......) for them too. They have been making rigs for kids for quite a while now so they are pretty well suited for the lil ones

we found that the hot sail we got originally rigged really flat making it easy to uphaul but really hard to stand with once it was up. I dont know if they still do it or not but the mast that came with it was a pre bent aluminium one which may have contributed to the twitchy feel of it.
Which ever brand you go with make sure that it comes with all the kid size components, especially the boom. Also if the kids are small ( under 12 ) try and get a sail that has been designed for the kids as it is properly balanced (center of effort ect )for a little kids, dont just get a little adult sail as the kids dont have the strength or the leverage to handle it. The better brands come with carbon masts designed for the kids sails so they actually flex properly from the downhaul pressure resulting in a light, stable, natural feeling sail.
