hey:

lost the mastbase plate from my spare mastbase
during my experiments with winter sailboarding on ice n snow :-(
read in the old days an AOL CD could do the job :-)

is the plate necessary and if so, does an old CD/DVD do the job ??

many thx

Yes and no......
There is a safety 'nipple' on the plate that should be placed last in the mast track - so not allowing the mast base to move backwards unless this is lifted - ensuring that you dont have a problem if the mastfoot works itself loose. That is for single bolts.

For double there shouldnt be a problem as it is unlikely that both will work themselves loose.

actually, the plate in the photo has the "place holder" underneath
the plate that I lost had NO such "nipple"
and that is why i ask the question

if there is NO nipple/placeholder, what purpose does the plate serve ?
less sliding loose ??

ON SB forum windman says and it is logical - the plate is so as NOT to scuff the deck of the board as one tightens the mastbase - if one was to use a CD , the obvious dangers are: sharp and breakage :-(
better to get a replacement if possible - is it ??

CD covered in ducktape maybe..... Or use a circle cut out from an old car mat. Thats what I make my rubber washers out of for my fin bolts.

None of my Mast plates have the nipple.

The biggest benefit of the plate is making it it easier to unscrew and not marking the board in the process.

I think the CD is too brittle. You can make one from a used plastic ice cream container.

I beleive that Streamlined do sell these seperately.
