I agree. Fv(kin awesome. Sail sets better, sails better, even down to little stuff liek it is easier to grab hold off when ur getting trashed in the waves.

And the stronger thing: bloody oath! I used to bust a mast each summer on average. Bought a 400 and 430 Ezzy RDM 3 yrs ago now and still going strong.

go the skinny...

Defo stronger, had some dodgy wipeouts with mast tip touching bottom and lifting the board out of water with no damage...

Oh the joy of rigging and de-rigging, no pissing around, scrunching the sail up and down your mast.

If you get one make sure the mast join is snug, some are notorious for being loose, which means they easily come apart whilst rigging, causing huge stress to the mast; or to you, if you find out and have to derig then rig again!

Also interested in going the skinny route. Being in the position of having very little gear atm and getting back into windsurfing after 15 years away from it I'm wanting to make the right choice with regards to sails, masts and extensions. Will be watching this thread with interest.

Do booms sit as securely on a skinny using a shim as they do SDM's? What brand choice's are there, the only I know of are Ezzy's and Powerex?

Do it maye you won't look back.
Broke 3 mast the first season in W.A. got a skinny an hav'nt broken one in 6 years!
I only sail in the waves.
They are lighter , stronger , rigging is easier and you seem to go for it more because you have faith in your gear.
Praise the skinny!!!
I would recommend either power-ex or ezzy. They are made in the same place and they sell sections if you do happen to break one or need 2 masts like a 400 and 430 (1 400 mast and a 430 top will do you for sizes 4.0 to 5.5).Some cheaper versions i have seen break as much as standard rdm's.

Ezzy used to be re-badged Powerex, since about 2004 it has been rebadged NoLimitz. I think Ezzy is better as their warranty is better. Powerex have said no shorebreak apparently.

Jordo I dunno what skinny the Hot Sails uses?????

jord get a hot rod from hot sails maui. they are pretty sweet..

or powerex. don't just go for the cheapest or you will snap them like twigs.. i bought a cheap one once and they broke when they totally shouldn't have. (they cause i had to get them replaced on warranty)
and broken masts can rip sails, poke holes in mast sleves and poke you in the head.

Hey fellas,
sorry to hijack the topic, but i was wondering what brand skinnies are the most versatile and rig well with most sails? ezzy?

also dont hold back in naming any masts that are very brand specific.

Cheers

Most are quite constant curve so you'll find Ezzy, No Limitz, Powerex work quiet well in 75% of sails.

Don't hold back ???? Heheheehhe everybody who reads that will sigh and say "here we go again Mark is about to let rip....."
Sorry to disappoint but when I name the companies who deliberately use crap bend curves in order to make you buy their masts I get a new bum'ole ripped for me by the myopic users of those brands

I just made the change to RDM, bought a 430 Powerex skinny, it transformed my sail from an overpriced piece of poo into a well-behaved, decent wind-range powerhouse...

Very happy

I like the extra carbon as it helps them to flex in gusts and let the wind out of the top of the sail which makes things smoother....

Good to hear nebbian, I have just purchased a Ezzy RDM (only ever used standard) and am just waiting for the right conditions to give it a go...

OK, a bit off topic, but bugger it.

What is the difference between an RDM reduced diameter mast and a Skinny?

reduced rig on aa normal diameter extension, and a skinny cant, it is also a fair bit thicker for most of the mastr and i would asume that it would have different flex properties to a skiny, i have a rdm on my 4.8 smack, and will be using it on my SF 5.3 untill i get a skinyy

Nothing AFAIK. Except that the term 'skinny' is probably sort of proprietary to No Limits who invented the whole concept.

thanks for this, this is the brand i was looking at, simply because most my sails are hotsails and would like to stick with that theme, just one question about the hot rods, are they pretty one sided to the kind of sails they need to be rigged on, because of the fact that hot sails are very stiff and strong sails, or are they quite versatile with the sail type, aka older streched sails still work well . even though it wil be used with my new 4.8 and 5.3 it would still be nice to be able to use it on my older 5.0 and 5.4 for when im just trying out new things and nto wanting to "endanger" the sails i wouldnt be able to replace quickly
