Unfortunately the wind and waves didn't cooperate this time. Friday was 10kts Easterly. Saturday had 10-12kts Northeast, just strong enough to get some little smacks. It was sunny though and was good to get away for the weekend. Hopefully next year.

Deano won with Tom White second.

Turn out was as poor as the wave size. About one sailor for every inch of swell and 2 knots of breaze. Maximum of about 6 sailors on the water in the 6 inch waves and 12 knot wind. Other than Deano and Tom, the placings I think were pretty much decided on who could be bothered persevering with a sail on one of those massive 250 litre paddle boards for the longest. A few guys who I didn't think could even ride a waveboard ended up with the top places. That is not a reflection on anything other than just how desperate the conditions were. All in all I guess the conditions were only slightly worse than any other normal Mambo. But we don't go there to just go sailing, otherwise the comp would not have been running for 27 years. It is fast becoming a kitesurfing comp though, which is not bad because if there is ever any decent conditions there will be plenty of room to sail in the wavesailing area. Everyone had a good weekend as usual and many thanks go out to all the organisors.

Light wind, small waves and even some rain, but in think I had the best MAMBO yet! I was one of those "persevering" sailors on the Naish 11'6" SUP (230 ltrs BTW). I had my kite gear rigged on the beach but was having much more fun on the SUP at the bar, the waves awsome even though they were only knee high (on the big ones). In those conditions the SUP boards allowed us to ride in the best area and have a lot of fun! I strongly recommend trying a SUP in light air, it not only gets you on the water, but it is also a lot of fun!
As for guys who can't ride a waveboard, just to clarifiy, Chris and I have both been windsurfing for well over 15 years and spend 95+% of your time in the waves wavesailing (this is not implying that we are any good either, just that we technically can). I normally only really get onto my pole gear each year when I'm in Maui, or if Newport reef really blows up with some strong wind and big swell, the rest of the time I usually dangle on my kite gear (until now!).

Anyhoo,

Sick event, more toys, more fun! Big props out to the Merimbula Sailboard club for putting in so much effort to ensure we all have as much fun as possible. See you all next year.

JB

It would be good it see a mambo style comp at Gerroa just for wavesailing, better chance of good wind with a 4day waiting period.

No wind or waves at Mambo?? What a shock!

Good call MA. A Mambo wavesailing event at Gerroa would go off!

yea but you know it would still be better sailing the day before or the day after the comp no matter how many days you run it over, thats the nature of the beast.

Dan,.... all this time I thought you must have never read that 'skeleton' post. It still sticks in your mind though eh? I thought it was pretty funny at the time but you never gave me the satisfaction of acknowledging it until now.

PS - Don't call me Mick. I am older and fatter than Mick.

Im not that much of a skeleton (78kgs).
Borrowed a 95lt Quattro from Jason at Board Crazy.
Got me goin in those light winds. Tom had a 110lt board and 6.2 sail.
Good idea ma but you know you would get 40 knots of wind and 2 inch waves. Maybe move to the Heads or Werri?
JB I was quite shocked when I saw you out. Havent seen you sail for years.
Cheers

Mambo was fun, i was one of those deperate guys on the 220 litre boards, didn't even get my wave board out the car, but i guess all the real wave sailors stayed home or on the beach and complained about not sailing instead of trying something new to entertain them, sailed with JB at the bar, was awesome fun. think the event was great, apart from not getting bigger waves or wind, but everyone made the most of it.
It was a fun weekend away hanging out with new people into the same thing as me, think thats what it all about...

I was kind of shocked myself, I have sailed the SUPs a few times in MAUI, and knew it was a lot of fun, but at MAMBO I was having nearly too much fun on the SUP! Maybe it was all the beer also? I normally only ever windsurf if it's smoking and good waves, normally only in MAUI and sometimes only once or twice a year in OZ, but I always have gear on the ready! Getting heavy these days, and not a fit as I once was, but SUP sailing suits me perfectly, and it's more fun than light wind kiting! I ended up sailing way more than I kited over the 4 days, maybe things are changing.............

I think that we will see them at most comps now when the wind is light and guys just want to get wet, and where are the rules to say you have to sail a short board with straps, i liked the freedom of no harness or straps to get in the way, love it, definately doing it all summer, well in 5 to 15 knots anyway..

I used JB's board out the bar for about an hour on Saturday and it was pretty good fun. I'm even thinking about getting one.

Personally I don't think that it should be allowed in a wavesailing comp as you can only get marginal turns on them, maybe if everyone was desperate to compete but it would be lame to watch.

I think it would be great for wavesailing comps, as an option to actually have a comp in conditions that you would normally have a non event. You can turn the SUP pretty hard when you get the technique down, the main trick is to use a small sail and keep everything light, then you can step back and really drive the tail into turns. It will never look as impressive and powerful as 25kn and logo high sailing, but looks much more impressive than sitting on the beach waiting for something to do.
Many guys waste week ends going to wave events on the east coast due to not enough wind, this is the main reason I kite majority of the time over windsurf, to many days off work to go to a comp were the wind never came in strong enough. With sup, at least you can all have a laugh and get some water time, and it's technically still wave sailing. It fun to blend in some longboard style, cross overs, and stalls with sailing. Bring it on i reckon!

It's like riding a mal in a shortboard comp. If you turn up to a shortboard comp, people do go for surfs on there mals but you don't compete on them.

I think I had the technique down in about 5 minutes, I was turning the thing fine. Got some nice cutbacks and good bottom turns but i was there to compete on my shortboard. I myself don't care if the conditions mean we don't compete. I'd rather that than have a result that is dependant on equipment rather than skill. Maybe have a non serious comp on those boards but you shouldn't be expected to own one to compete in a wavesailing comp.

They need to make them cheaper, if your going to spend $2000 I think most people will buy another short board.

I agree with ma, big boards are mad fun, but its hard to justify buying one over a proper board. However I had heaps of fun in maui on the big boards with alex (9yrs old). He could do all the usual learning steps on it, then we could jump on it together and go out to the reefs and see the turtles and catch waves together. If you got a kid its great fun to get a board that can take the both of you at once. Best way to get them into it, especially if you can get them feeling planing on a wave.

Maybe a long board class they run when it's lite wind under 10 knots. It wont be for everyone thats for sure. it's a bit of cash just for a lite wind board, but then again most sailors pay more for a small wave board. They are going to be great to teach someone who has never sailed, they can go straight in the surf with it when it's 10 knots and can uphaul it eazy as.
And the boards are only going to get better from here, but never replace your favourite 75 litre beast.
And for the sunny not so windy saturday at mambo, i had a exellent sail.

Whyner definately picked up the technique easily. The couple of waves I saw him ride were definately the best out of the guys riding the beasts. Great novelty value for those with extra cash to burn. Maybe the guys trying to promote them might like to bring enough boards to the next comp so as everyone can have a crack at it if there is not enough wind to have a real comp.

I know everyone at Mambo who got there late probably doesnt want to hear it right now, but the Tues before the comp was so good!!
I sailed opposite the airport, ended up being maxed on my 5.3 and 75ltr board really needed a 4.5 at the end, some of the others re-rigged 4.1.
There was small wind swell (that looked massive compaired to the swell for the rest of the week!) and cross shore. solid 25-30knot NE. keep an eye out on the RPS website for some footage in the next few days.
As for the rest of the week, didnt sail much.. but sick party! anyone who saw our little unit.. the one on ford oval with the disco ball!!
Cant wait till next year as allways!!

ka222 I went to a secret spot north of Merimbula on that Tuesday.
Nearly logo high waves and 20 + knots of wind. But a small storm killed it for about an hour so I packed up and went back to ford oval where it was goin ballistic. Must of been 30 knots but had to do the family thing so the missus and I took my young fellow for a walk along the boardwalk around Lake Merimbula.Surprised you guys didnt get a mention at the prezzo as I thought you were both havin a good go at it.

Oh nice was that Bounda (not sure if thats how you spell it) island?
a few local kite guys told us to go up there so we went and checked it out in the morning and it looked pretty sick! big walk to get on the other side of the island unless we went to the wrong carpark??
The waves were breaking funny so we ended up sailing at the airport and i even got my van all the way to the beach so pretty stoked with that! haha

Hey well done you got heaps of waves up there!

cheers

Not so secret anymore.
No seriously a lot of people know about North Tura beach( Theres a viewing platform there) but its a national park and cost 7 bucks to go sailin. Bit like up here where I sail it costs money to enter but you can get a season pass for $22.
Will be sailin there next year if its small at Ford oval.
