Hi,

I just moved to Melbourne from overseas and will stay about 7 month.

Can anybody tell me what the wind conditions will be like during that time (I live in Elwood).
I plan on getting some windsurfing equipment soon but am not sure what size of board to get.

Hopefully there is a lot of wind so I can go out on something smaller than 100l

Many thanks and cheers...

On Sunday 23rd April 2006 it's going to be a NNW at about 20 kts at 9:00am, building to 25-30 later in the morning, then switching southerly at similar strength with a front in the afternoon.

Apart from that, not really sure.

No more 15-20kt sea breezes likely until spring, but closer to winter there are often some big days 20kts +. It's pretty hard to predict, although from (failing) memory, this time of year is often not as windy as winter/spring. Go to RPS in Elwood or Sailboard Headquarters in Sandringham and the guys there should be able to set you up with something usable for your weight and ability, what ever they may be. Plus a nice thick wettie- there's some great sailing in the bay in winter, but it can be ucken freezing.

See you out there.

used to live in Elwood ...many moons ago....

NE to NW go to point ormond (the big white beacon) the northerlies are strong but get up early they usually fizzle out about 11 ish. NE is gusty... N to NW best. heaps of north winds through out winter.

SE to SW (usual seabreeze summer months) elwood sailing club / albert park / or if you want a bit of a wave/ramp ...green point - near SHQ.

Cold Squally Winter Frontals straight from the South Pole, any of the above, it's going to be onshore and messy, but you can get some rare insane conditions if you are "up for it" and have a warm wetsuit

Make the 3hr pilgrimage to Sandypoint. has to be SW or E - NE 20knts+

if all else fails - RSL Elwood, Sunday night blues jam , free entry, cheap beers - magic.

Thanks MickeyS and Windy Miller...seems like I have something to look forward to. About the cold wheather, thats alright. I am from Germany and surfing in Spring means 5 to 10 degrees and thick rubber suits [}:)]

I actually live right on Point Ormond...juhu.

Looks like I am getting myself a small wave board for the heavy days and a bigger one for the not so heavy days...can't wait to hit the water.

many thanks and cheers...

If you're used to sailing at those temperatures, I'll recognise you at Point Ormond as the one whose happily sailing in August in just a pair of board shorts.

Might see you out there. Cheers

try point henry Geelong. Great on a north or west direction during winter if the winds not in a good direction for Melb.
