They reckon on the ezzy site you should use a longer top section. In the end though I think it would come down to experimentation. One will give a stiffer mast, the other softer, probably also neither will be constant curve...not 100% sure on that. I say experiment.

Cut a bit of both pieces of your 430 - then you'll get constant curve

Matt here from Auswind.

We supply The very high volume selling Powerex RDm 400 and 430 mast to the aussie wave sailing market. These have certainly become the mast of choice in Australia's premiere wavesailing locations - Margarets, Gnaraloo etc. due to the price and durability combination. There was some market resistance at first but after a few seasons, once crew saw how long the masts were lasting the flood began.

You can purchase bases and tips seperately although our supplier has recently moved to sell only complete masts to us - we will try to manage the numbers in house. Until we have a problem we will continue to sell bases and tips.

I personally run a 430 and 400 and combine both to get a 415 - which is a very handy size.

Curve differences - well i cant feel the difffrence but i use a Severne Renegade which is much more mast tolerant (and has lees luff curve) than an S1 which , due to its increased and more specific luff curve, may get a little more fussy.

I usually use the longest section at the base (ie the 430 base) but it could be good to mix it up to get equal wear and tear on the 400 and 430 parts.

Hope this helps

My 5.2 goes on a 400 mast and I've tried two configurations of the the ezzy mast: 400base & top, and 370base/ 430 top. Now i know that mixing such different sizes is not recommended, but its an extreme example of the stiffer top/softer base approach. It was yuck. The sail just didn't curve properly and was so unstable.

I haven't been able to test a stiffer base and softer top yet though, don't have the gear...

Leech,

That's an interesting observation you make. I use exactly the same combo for my Ezzy 4.7 which needs a 400, and I find it works fine for me. Perhaps the effect varies depending on what sail you use?

Cheers, Jens

Windy, I done this when I snapped the top of a 400, so had to use bottom 400 and top 430. It worked ok. Out of choice, I would go bottom half 430. I don't know why, just sounds right to me.
