... don't get this one. Always thought who ever is the furthest upwind/ closest to the breaking section gets the wave.

That appears to be another "local" rule. It's certainly the way it works at Margarets, everybody forms a queue and waits for the sets, well that's how it was when I last sailed there 10 years ago.
It's also how the locals have sailed here, not just a matter of being upwind, it's head of the queue, as long as you've gone to the end of the queue first!!!

why do some of the crew get so worked up when they cant get a wave???
some times you get a bag full and some times not thats just the way it is
