yes and no.

new gear is easier to sail than old stuff. but i don't think it makes you improve.

it's usually practice that makes you improve

It can definitely help you enjoy it more (especially if the 'new' gear is suited to your conditions...ie; body weight, water, wind etc.) Rather than 'picking-up' an old general kit & trying to 'make-do' with something that suits someone else???

If you enjoy it more, you'll do more w/surfing, hence, (love that word....makes me sound intelig-inttell...smart) you'll improve?!?

"I think.....therefore, I am...unfortunately,not on the water!!!"

Hardening the fk up. Thats what makes you improve.

Selling your house, telling the boss where to stick his job and living in a Kombi on the beach will beat any ***** new board!

Thats how I do it!

and in the real world, , gear to suit you and your conditions will always help. I found that newer gear was also safer so improved my confidence and definitely made a difference in trying new tricks.

if you have a 8'10" fibreglass board, fibreglass mast and 1992 RAF Wave I would urge you to upgrade. With the older gear you are in another sport altogether.

Doesn't have to be super brand new. Look on the Buy/Sell there seems to be some good stuff in the last 3 seasons for sale.

I would get some good second hand stuff that you feel will suit you then slowly upgrade your kit.

Sure it makes you improve, if for instance you actually start staying on the board during gybes and tacks you start to sail longer and start to iron out the technique bugs you had. The biggest improvement in gear recently has been the range that it works in, so you get all of the benefits associated with that- more time planing etc.
