hello all.

i have been given a windsurfing set by a nieghbour he was going to throw out. it all looks in decent condition except a few things. the swivel thing where the mast connects to the board is broken, and i am wondering does anyone know a ballpark figure for a replacement. this is something that ive never tried before, and i am wondering how expensive are spare parts? also half the handle is lost.

pardon the ignorance, ive no idea of the correct terminology, are there any good sites that start from the basics?

im trying to do this on the cheap though, at least until i know if i like it and don't suck at it.

i think the swivel thing is called a universal joint, cost about $70 and the handel thing is a boom which can cost new from $250 - $800 or buy one second hand..

from my experience EVERYONE sucks when they start windsurfing, you'll spend a lot of time in the water rather than on it, some people pick it up quicker than others... to improve the learning curve:

get some lessons from a shop, holiday resort or a mate
get some advice on what gear to start with, speak with a shop or ask anyone on this forum.

hey raovq,

To replace that universal joint (the swivel thing) it should only cost about $35 and 15minutes to take the old one off and put a new one you only need to replace the rubber bit and not the complete unit (in most cases). better yet bring the whole broken part in to a shop and they can tell you if its repairable and put a new one in for you. These are the most common parts to brake on older windsurfers i replaced heaps when i working in a windsurfing shop. A boom (handle thing) will only cost about $100 for an ok second hand one and start out at about $199 for a newie. If you buy a second hand one make sure its a clamp on boom not a tie on boom.
Good luck with it all hope i cya out on the water soon

Hi Raovq,

It looks like you are missing a mast extension, a universal joint, and the mast base is broken.

Technology has moved on since your board was manufactured, I doubt you'll be able to find exact replacements of the bits that are broken/missing. However, all is not lost!

I've got a similar board, and the good news is that you should be able to use a modern mast extension, universal joint, and mast base. If you advertise on the "Buy and Sell" area on this site, say "Wanted, CHEAP Mast base, universal joint, and mast extension" then you might be able to pick some up quite cheaply.

Modern mast bases use a little piece of metal that sits in the mast track and the base screws itself down onto it, therefore the mast can't move (unlike the original system on your board where you could move the mast by pushing down on that little lever). This isn't a big issue, I found that once I'd moved the mast to where I wanted it to be I kept it there for months.

Not sure what these three things are worth, I can't imagine that secondhand they would total more than $50, but I could be wrong.

Good luck!

Hi,
Why not just hire a board and rig while you are beginning. You will get the latest new gear, a big comfy board and some tuition thrown in. Then if you decide you like it buy some windsurfing gear you could progress on.

You can rent beginners boards at Pelican point (on the river) or Safety Bay (Rockingham) for about $20 an hour. You can even get 'package deals' where lessons are thrown in.

By far the best way to go I believe.

I completely second that!
I have a feeling that your kit is unlikely to be repairable without a lot of time & effort. You need a new mast track ( the bit on the board) and the chances of getting one to fit are slim (I experienced the same problem once & ended up binning my beginners board). The bottom of your mast looks splintered & therefore the whole is probably a gonner too! Given that you also only have half a boom...

Sorry to be so down, but the easiest option is, as Gary says, to hire initially - if you enjoy it you will progress rapidly onto kit that you can buy & will last, as opposed to chucking money at kit you will outgrow quickly. Modern kit is also 100 times easier to learn on - therefore making the learning curve faster & more fun. Why punish yourself?

Good luck whichever way you go!
