has anyone got some good info on sailing north queensland during winter (may-july). i'm thinking of taking the wife and rugrat for a holiday, (get away from tassie) ,my only requesite is wind, hers is a bar by the beach with a comfy chair for reading under a palm tree. thinking of between mackay and cairns to get trades. is this a fair call? anyone know a reasonable priced resort type place in that area, and what about gear hire / resort gear? any info appreciated. cheers easty

Hi easty, I know another easty who's an arsehole, but it's not you. I talked to some northerners for hours about sailing north. I wanted to go august this year but too busy with work. Dunno about hire places but a good place to sail is Kurrimine beach with flat water & waves and resort and cabins on the beach.Kurrimine is located just north of Mission Beach which is not far from Innisfail south of Cairns. Mission Beach sailing is not bad either apparently, you can sail over to Dunk island, or maybe from South Mission beach. The other good spot is Green island where there is always wind ( check out the wind observations on weatherzone). You can take your gear over on the boat but it's expensive and you should notify the ferry operators early. The sailing at Green is sposed to be real good with some excellent flat water blasting before encountering some half decent waves. The cairns local spot is Yorkeys Knob, not far north out of town. I think they said later in winter is better for wind.Hope all this helps, it is hearsay remember, but fairly accurate I believe.

There arent any hire places in Cairns.
If you want a bar on the beach a palm tree and wind there are two options Trinity Beach... 25 minutes north of cairns...but no one sails there anymore as the wind is a bit gusty and swirls around off the headlands, or Ellis beach 35 mintutes from the city which is a bit more remote and known as shark alley as the trawlers dump their by catch upwind from it.
Yorkeys is where the locals go. Green Island is about 56 dollars p/p a trip these days as they have stopped selling season passes to the public...F&Cken ****s...Beacause it blows solid there most of the winter. If its rainy on the coast the wind buggers off, but it will still be solid 30 out at green. As for waves there....the japs will wave to you when you are sailing but thats about it unless you know when and where to sail. You have be carefull of tides otherewise you will lose fins also bastard turtles.
Any way seabreeze has graphs for cairns airport and green island and low isles which is up port douglas way.
Ps: this year has been the worst year for wind i can remember. it might pay to check back here next year before you head up.

hey arsehole,
yeah the wind up north there is ok.. just take a fair sail range i would sail like 5.0 being the smallest you need if from tassy, and the largest. ummm ****ed if i know .. the largest you got.. to get more sailing.. and as for boards.. don't worry about taking board like 20L over your weight but then you only need one board under you weight.
well that is what is say..
