Interesting idea. Those who don't want it don't need to use it. Would it harm the forum in any way?

I think it's a good idea. But i'm not sure if not many people would use the forum as much.

Chat rooms further promote the degeneration of written english, you degenerates.

Actually its interesting how chat and sms generate new usages and shortcuts. Given the parlous state of literacy these days, it wouldn't surprise me to see the genre formally codified and take over from formal english in lots of applications. Common formal english will become arcane like Shakespeare and the King James Bible.

So, not to be a stick in mud old fogy, I reluctantly vote for a chat space, and damn us all to hell.

I even plotted this idea in the 'web site improvement' thingo a while back. I'd say we wouldn't get a whole lot of traffic in there unless we had a planned 'chat' time... sounds a little goofy I guess, but its worth a shot.

The kito's went through this last year.

Those who were interested sent each other, and some posted onto the topic, their msn addresses.
Then they just use that to chat.

If you were interested enough you could do something like that.

NotWal, agree with your sentiments. I cant spell for s..t so always check via word spell checker, and hopefully I get it right most times.
Nothing better when logging on seeing all the topics posted, chuck a few comments in and generally have a laugh at the less serious ones This includes the witty posts from the usual blokes
There is one over here, I start laughing even before I read what he has written He surprises me every now and then and puts up a serious topic but mostly he is just clowning about with good humour.
Hopefully if a chat room gets going we don’t see the end of this.

I dont think that it would reduce the use of the forum.

In fact I wonder if it would actually eliminate alot of the posts that are pure crap and allow them to be dealt with in a real time chats that will if you have ever seen the convo's in places like brischat.com to fizzle out pretty quickly.

The posts in the forum may then become alittle more topic specific? Dont get me wrong, I love this forum and think its cool people can say what they like on here. I also think that it would be cool to allow a chat where we can chat with fellow windsurfers in real time. Lets face it, anything technical or more involved should be posted as we cant and never will all be online at the same time to chat about in a chat room.

I think you need a huge number of members to make it viable. I am a member of a website that has over 100,000 registered users worldwide, and the chatroom regularly has about 5 to 10 members 24 hours a day, sometimes more than 40, sometimes only 1 or 2 in the chatroom,hardly think even those that were keen could consistently make it viable, but who am I to say I'm a practising anatomical physiologist not an internet officianado.
