Anyone know anything about windsurfing in Philip Island?
Is Cat Bay/ Right Point the main place? When does it work? Any dangers?

Dangers:

1) Sharks. Those great big white ones (well, white underneath, anyway). If you get the chance check out the size of the one that Vic Hislop caught there. Great white numbers have been increasing lately, due to them being a protected species now. They hang around phillip island like there's a big fat beacon that says "Swim here!". No idea why, there are precious few fish there, but they do call that place home. I've been spearfishing for years, seen lots of sharks underwater, and am not afraid of most of them... but phillip island gives me the willies.

2) Current. At least spearfishing you get some ripper currents around that area, currents that will drag you where you really don't want to go.

I went spearfishing there once, scared the cr@p out of me and haven't been back since, I wouldn't go windsurfing there if you paid me.

But doubtless there are some hardcore guys on the forum that laugh in the face of such mundane issues, good luck to you if you do venture out.

i have seen guys out at cat bay - just working the waves back and forwards - it was a 40 knot day.... cat bay was sheltered - 25+knots!!

the big teethies are out at the seal colony mostly - about 1-2k out. I have a friend who got crusied by a big one while goat boating off the main surf beach, so they do laps now and again. Everyone on the beach saw it, but he was too busy falling off to notice (dude, bad cas of BP's).

The Vic Hislop catch (murder??) was a pregnant female, weighed in at 2.5 tonnes.

Other dangers are ***n cold water!!

Hislop said there were bigger ones out there when he caught that giant off the Knobbies. I saw a video a couple of weeks ago some fishermen took off Phillip Island that showed a great white swimming around them. Just make sure you dont fall off and you'll be fine!
