Anyone one owned or sailed a Starboard Carve 90? Looking to get a 2003, 2004 model if they existed.

Sail range?
Weak spots?
Other comments?

cheers

Relapse,

I saw a 2004 Starboard Carve at Windsurfing Perth for $750.00.

The 2003 and 2004 board are very different as the 2004 had deep double concaves. I've sailed the 2004 model a couple of times.

Pros:
It's great as a high winder. Very controllable (sits very flat on the water) and is smooth through chop, gets upwind really well and it was easy to gybe/turn.
Cons:
Not the earliest planer.

Think 2nd wind has a new one at a good price...

Cheers, Annika

Hi Annika,

What do you mean by high wind? 20-30 knots? I was under the impression that the carve 90 was supposed to be an attempt at a board that tried to do it all. Maybe it is more a high wind board?

People have recomemded the Carve 99 but I have read that is may be a bit too big for the 4.5 - 5.8 conditions I plan to sail in. I am 72kgs.

Cheers

Depends exactly what your after. The 90 is an alrounder (easy turning, but also can get some speed in a straight line when well powered), but I think it's strength was definately in the stronger winds (23+kn) where I felt I had much more control than on other boards. It would take the sail range your talking of pretty confortably aswell. The 99 would plane much earlier, on the lighter days with the 5.8m, but you might find it getting a little bouncy on the stronger days with your weight...

It really comes down to rider preference and local conditions. If your mainly sailing 5.5 (powered) or smaller I'd go the 90... (Is it your only board?). Otherwise the 99 would give you more planning water time for the lighter days.

Hope that helps, Annika

if you plan to sail in 4.5-5.8 conditons i would be looking at an 80-85L wave/freeride board...something such as a fanatic new wave or jp freestyle wave???...im about 70kg and put my 5.8 on a 77L no worries, really jus depends on conditions you are sailing in
best of luck

I am planning to give windsurfing another go this summer after burning out some 6 years ago (who would believe!!) Trying to keep it simple this time with one board and not bother with the lighter +6m stuff. Looking for a board with a 5.1 - 5.3 sweet spot for my weight (72kg), but will still work ok with a 4.5 and 5.8 - 6.

Doubt I will be doing much wave sailing, mainly freeride/bump and jumping. Will be in the market towards the end of Dec, currently backpacking around South America.

Thanks for all the suggestions to date.

Derek
