hey stefan
i've heard if you use some duct tape around the joint each time you put it together it keeps the sand out allthough i reckon this would be more of a pain in the arse than a stuck mast anyway.

You may wish to check whether the mast still is plugged. This can easily be done by filling mast with hose and seeing of water comes out the other end (check both top and bottom sections). If it does then you have found an entry point for sand.

If this is the problem it can be sealed of fairly easily.
The top can be sealed of with Kneadit or expanding foam, care must be taken as some sails locate in the top of the mast with a male plug, this has to be allowed for.
For the other ends you can utilise some old packaging polystyrene (min 1" thick) and jam this up there don't cut the styrene just force the mast through it, this will give a tighter fitt.

If ther sand is coming in through the jiont then Davo's method is probably easiest. As you are using a Skinny mast the tape shouldn't roll of when you are rigging.

alternatively
If the female part of your mast (top section) has a reasonable chamfer on the inside you could get a small tight fitting "o"ring onto the male section, this would compress and seal under load.

The only thing you may have to make sure of is that the cross section of the oring wasn't larger than the chamfer.

At the end of the day there is a benifit from having your mast stick, A Good Aerobic Workout and lots of amusement for the rest of the crew.

All the best

i dont know if anyone has done it before hand but do you think that putting some grease, or something like that around the male/female part would work????
in theory it should stop water entering inbetween the join thus no sand and no more stuck mast

If there is no sand in your mast making it stick together then you could try sanding the ferrel lightly with some 600 wet and dry. Be careful not to sand off too much though as it will cause it to become a loose fit.

grease would prolly work best, but if you dropped it in the sand while rigging.... messy

Elmo is onto it, 99% it's sand. Seal top and bottom of tip section and top and bottom of base section. Champagne corks are handy for this.

The key is to buy a one piece fibreglass mast. You can't go past them

Blue Juice; It does not matter what you do to try keep the sand out. We all know that the amount of sand in there is relative to the amount of time our gear spends being washed in a Scarborough shore break.

Spanner in the works here, but I am a believer in no plugs. (just the top one) "Put it together clean". When there is no plugs it is a lot easier to hose out the sand from the inside or pour some water in and shake. Mt Franklin provides a good product for such aplications.

Cum on Dicko, I tried no plugs for a while and I'm sure you were on the end of mine giving it a good pull when it got stuck.
Each to his own no plugs for you then Yep I will agree with you on the put it together clean helps heaps. I was often cleaning my pole in that shower at scabs

I used to get the same problem with the mast parts getting stuck together.

NEVER anymore! I just wrap a short piece of brown sticky tape (the sort you use for packing parcels)around the (clean) join of the assembled mast before rigging. Easy to remove afterwards and not messy.

Works a treat every time, and you don't have the problem of the 2 parts becoming detached during rigging/derigging.

Problem solved!
