This would be a very short boom indeed. What size sail: 0,3 m??

I think most reduced diameter Alloy booms are going to be heavy. I know the Chinook RDG & the Severne Metal are both heavier than the Standard diameter counterpart. This is because the 26/27mm tubing has to be generally thicker wall for strength compared to the 29mm. That said I would rather have heavier RDG than lighter standard diameter - so much nicer feel IMHO. The only lightweight small diameter booms I know of are kids booms & those are usually shorter like 120/125cm versions. Hope that helps.

There are quality RDG carbons which cost perhaps 2x what an alloy does but you'll get 3-4x the lifespan. Seems like good economics even for a cheap git like me.

yeah i'm looking for a kids type boom so weight is important. current kids boom is starting to get to it's limits and I didn't want to pay for carbon.

What diameter are you thinking of as 'Reduced Diameter'?

I thought 32mm tube (plus the grip material) was 'standard diameter'

And 29mm tube is reduced diameter.

Sunshine Coast Boardsports have a very stiff boom in that size in 29mm and it very reasonably priced: Sunshine Wave 29mm 135-195.

It's not particularly heavy, but not particularly light either, except that being small helps.

unifiber tapered aluminium is 26mm and 2.45kg but needs an rdm adaptor.
duotone silver series 27.5mm 2.35kg

goya super skinny pro carbon is 24.5mm and 2.08kg
severne enigma is 25mm 1.88kg
severne aluminium is 26mm but no weight is listed.

Thanks for the info. Looks Like I will have to recalibrate my idea of a Reduced diameter Boom.

my older carbon booms are all around 32 and the older skinny carbon is about 29 inline with your comments.

I just measured and weighed my sons xs3 boom which is 27.5mm including grip and 1.7kg. it's 110-160cm.

so I guess the question is now. what's the lightest sub 28mm, 140-190cm aluminium boom

Weights a ton .. but 26mm and v-grip .. will make a huge difference with smaller hands ...

But for $300-400, I'd rather pay a bit more and buy a used carbon boom like the Severne Enigma.

Most comfortable boom will be AL360 25mm with very nice V-Grip (not likely to find second hand) ....

unfortunately the benefits of a skinny boom arm go out the window when the boom itself weighs as much as the sail and mast combined.

the enigma was the boom I thought i'd end up settling on but was hopeful I could find something in alloy. that hope is fading. I may need to sell a few of my existing carbon booms.

Problem is Kids booms are are short generally don't have a ton of extension(which makes them light...) & adult RDG's really HAVE to be that heavy in order to be strong enough. So either buy a used carbon or the biggest Kids boom you can find until you can afford carbon. The Chinook Kids boom is 120-160 & 26mm & pretty light. Maybe long enough? If you could find a longer version with similar tube spec out there...

If youre going to eventually get an enigma just buy the metal then you'll have spare extension clips and head.
