hey! I just move to sydney and I've been driving around some bays but I haven't found the wind. can anybody tell me when does the wind season begin I'll appreciate if some one tells me where is the best spot to learn. my wife wants to learn but so far we haven't found the place. And could someone tell me how wind works around here. Once from the m1 at the airport I saw some windsurfers having a blast at botany bay , but I haven't seen them again ....I guess because there is no wind. Thanks for sharing some tips around sydney.cheers!!!!!!

I'm fairly new to the sport myself. In my opinion, the best part of the season in Sydney, is about to begin. See the URL above, which is a link to the wind charts. We are just about to get into a pattern of fairly regular afternoon winds from NE or E. The airport spot, tends to get the highest winds. There are other areas which are smoother, and these would be better from beginners. What part of sydney are you from?

Da wind used to be clockwork in Sydney, esp. for the 6 months around summer. Used to be NE, with about 3 days southerly per fortnight. Sailing off Balmoral or Botany Bay, you could set your clock based on the onshore windspeed. Sailing days were consistent and predictable. Triangular racing in the Harbour was almost easy.

Last summer time I was there (I'm an unfortunate ex-pat), wind was ****. There was no consistency, winds going all over. It started getting crazy in the early '90s, I found at the time.

Still, your best w-surfing time is coming for many months. In the winter, offshore (westerlies) winds can be caught in Kurnell, the Airport strip, on the way to LaPerouse, and so on.

If you just want to safely fart around in a pond, you can also go Narrabeen and catch the wind from most directions.

Have a good one!

Yes, Narrabeen would be a good place for learning. Also, the Pittwater side of Palm Beach.

Yesterday looked promising at Kyeemagh but the wind gods failed to get over about 10 knots. Keep watching though we are sure to get some NE'ers soon. Basically the wind starts around now but is not really consistent until late nov through to end of Feb.

Just watch out for the Bull Sharks at Rodd Point. Great place to learn water starting however.
