I was getting better at windsurfing, got into the harness and straps at the same time. Then i developed pains in my wrists and elbows and wrists, now i cant even pick my board up. lifes tough at times especially when you cant get on the water and its windy.

You need to build up strength in your forearm muscles.
I have had it in the past and it hurts like hell so you have my sympathy.
I found execises to do.
Get an old broom stick or something like that. Tie some rope around the middle of it and hang a weight off the end of it. You then wind it up with your hands with your arms staight and your elbows against you stomach/hips. You can do it both forward and reverse grip.
Also dumbell wrist curls with your wrists off the end of a weight bench.
I also have a spring type hand compressor that I use in the car.
You also have to do stretches.
Put your hand flat against the wall so your arm is at 90 deg to it and stretch as far as you can. you can do this with your hand facing up and down.
The prayer like one works well too, bring your hands down as far as you can and you can do it both with the front and back of you hands.
I have had no further probs since doing these few things.
In the meantime go to a chemist and they have forearm velcro straps that go around your forearm just below your elbow to stop the tendons pulling away from the bone giving you the pain. they are about 3-5cm wide and may help you.
All the best.

Know the feeling, but perhaps strapping may help. I have R/Arthritus and find those elastic type joint guards are good, have to do whatever you can to stay active, sailing certainly does that! Keep at it, don't give it up totally.....

Sounds like you definitely need some of that HTFU cream that I read about here recently.
Only I cant find where to get it and nobody will tell me what's in it.

I do know that "Goldcoastmoz" has a large can of it in his medicine cabinet, along with a bowl of salt, lemon juice and vinegar. He sez it fixes everything.

Got the same in my elbow, doc says golfers elbow, diff to tennis elbow.
Just a thought, but I put it down to shortening my harness lines. Gone longer again, with little trouble on the water now.
As roberto said, wrist curls with dumb bells, same advice as my doc just don't be as lazy as me, do it.

I had this problem too, to the extent that I had to see a doctor.

Take a break every couple of days, if you've been getting out every day.

Concentrate on not using your arm strength too much - constantly try to commit your weight to the harness, and try wiggling your fingers to make sure you're not squeezing the boom. I still find myself squeezing, especially if the wind is strong and it's choppy - natural self-preservation reflex - but it does lead to muscle fatigue.

I was surprised to find recently that I could do 20 pull-ups. Previously I couldn't even do a single one. Where did this newfound strength come from? POOR WINDSURFING TEQUNIQUE!!!

Exactly what I got and did... now all good
There was another thread somewhere about this?

Mate, I had the same problem. Went to physio, doctors, massage, injections. It all worked for a while, but I needed a longterm solution, with preferably no drugs or surgery involved. I found a website, giving advice to fellow sufferers. It suggested holding onto a cross bar and just hanging there, so that the shoulder and arm muscles are stretched and tension which builds up in the elbow in relieved. They called in “burning out the problem”. I tried this on a playground in Gero, and could not believe the effect! Immediately the pain got less and my arm went all warm. Being in the belief, I would eventually have to undergo surgery – I could not even pick up a mug of coffee (!) - I am amazed and happy to say, that none of this will be necessary. I am now painfree and sail more than before!
Get yourself one of those pull up bars in a fitness store and “hang yourself” everyday, especially after sailing for 1 minute and repeat twice. Then do some light stretching. I can only advise anyone with a similar problem to give it a shot! It’s also good for your back, as a little extra benefit.

lee

i got a really bad elbow from gardening/digging believe it or not but it buggered up my sailing - what finally cured it was dry accupuncture needling at Subiaco Sports Massage. i was sceptical but boy did it work !!!!

also, longer harness lines are only way to go - i used to sail short lines for years, then finally went long and now spend far less energy in sailing because i am way more comfortable.

hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for the great advice concerning this bloody tennis elbow. My doctor suggested taking a year away from surfing; i think not.
