hi,
wondering if anyone has any knowledge about how the moon affects the wind?

i am trying to predict windy times of the month. i have found some theory that suggests that during summer it is normally windier around the new moon and during winter it is windier around the full moon...
is this total bollucks or is there some data/theory that may help me.

also, does anyone know of any websites that have daily windrose diagrams for the year. the BOM has monthly roses but nothing more frequent.

i am situated in brisbane qld.

cheers

Moon certainly affects tides, but do tides affect winds???
Somehow I doubt it! Can't think of any other way the moon could influence winds.

Agree with you Gestalt, that site totally lacks credibility.

Here's the latest evidence of global warming.

My wife noticed a trend a few years ago here, we seemed to have the worst winter storms at high tide, causing bad beach erosion. She phoned the weather bureau and they assure her it was purely coincedence.

Surely an 'apparent' high tide is caused by the front/storm?
The high winds have this effect on local waters.
I have sailed locally (Safety Bay) for over 16 years and every front i have sailed in has caused these apparent higher tides.

Yep, you're right of course, it's called "storm surge" partly due to the very low air pressure and the force of the wind.
This is the answer my wife got from BOM, but she'd also been monitoring the actual tides, not just water hight

tides deffiently affect the wind here. the seabreeze always gets stronger when the tide changes and starts comng in, im at a beach by the way.

Seems that the influence of the moon still puzzle a few..
there is few cults that are fully into it if you want

As far as I understand the moon influence except from its gravitational force is pretty limited..and even atmospherical tides are pretty negligeable.
So on the influence of the moon on weather patterns !? I'm pretty doubtful.

I think the idea of the full moon influencing the libido..and then mad sex is to be had on the full moon is a far more interesting one

cheers nebbian,
very nice site. i am looking for something that has archived data as well. so i could plug in say september the 4th and see what the the average recorded wind strength and direction was. helps for planing future outcomes.

i can get monthly wind roses that let me know what to expect for the month but was looking for something more accurate.

if you know anyone with a crystal ball that will do as well.

cheers

Hi Gestalt,

That site has archived data. I'm not sure why you didn't notice it, either you didn't see the "Period" drop down boxes at the top of the page, or I've got a cookie set on my computer that means that we go to different pages when we click on the same link.

From the site, on September 4th 2005 in Brisbane the wind peaked at 8 knots NNW, and was around 7 for most of the rest of the day.

If it turns out that you get a different page to me, then click on the "Archive" link near the top of the page, fill in the boxes with your country and location, and then you should be able to pick a period of time to view. This has loads of data, highly recommended. Also their predictions aren't bad, although you have to bump up the wind speed by around 30% to be accurate.
