My whole windsurfing life has been dodging penguins and icebergs, and I've never suffered from blisters or raw palms. (no jokes please ), but have recently discovered the delights of blasting along in boardies, dodging coral bommies and sea snakes. But my hands are getting ripped apart. Is this a consequence of hot tropical water, or should I just harden the **** up?

I think the latter Easty!

Cant beat that feeling of a hot summer blast in nothin but the boardies, deliberatly falling off every now and then to enjoy.

But the hands i think cause your in a tropical location their moist 24/7 so dipping them in warm saltwater as well like your trying to soften the skin to remove that annoying splinter would definatly cause more irritations.

Sea snakes hey? mmmm Has to be noah'S

Oh im there with u right now in my mind.

Well aren't you all a bunch of funny bast...s Wouldn't have expected less! Yes Lenny, sea snakes, to be honest I haven't seen one. But the other day I saw something about 1.5 metres long out of the side of my eye, and just got a brief glimpse before it wagged it's tail and dived. That was a really bad session, as I couldn't stop thinking about what it was. And the more I thought about it, the more convinced I was it was a small croc. Suddenly I was falling off on all the outside gybes, but carving the ones next to the beach in 1 foot of water. I tried to tell myself to harden the f.... up, but it was no use. Next day there was a few of us blasting around, so no fear, safety in numbers. But back to the original question, you warm climate sailers have obviously had the problem, as you have the remedies, so is this a problem (the raw skin) that only affects the lucky bastards who sail warm water all the time. Or maybe it was the boom I was using, a brand new Loft, although I seriously doubt this, as it seems the same grip as my other booms.

easty where are you sailing?

i noticed with different booms my hands would blister up more.

one particular north one with an oval tube was a shocker but felt comfy in the hands.

trya different grip...relax zee fingers.

Troppo, I'm getting a few sails in PNG, just out of Port Moresby, while working up here. It might be the new boom, or the hot water, or as you say I might be gripping too hard thinking about things with sharp teeth, and stonefish. Relax zee fingers is great advice for any sailor anywhere.

Yeah Troppo, trade winds rule Unfortunately work doesn't But I get out enough to make my work stints bearable. Local spot is a big lagoon, with reef breaks on the outside. The locals (3 or 4 of them)rip the waves there on windsurfing and kite gear, I'm happy blasting around inside the lagoon. Regarding black bass, yes, gotta contact who lives in a spot an hour north of here where they've got bass and barra, trying to tee up a trip to coincide with a sunday arvo and the right tide. But I'm back to Tassie and the 5mm wettie tomorrow

you can toughen you hands up by wiping them with acetone once daily. after a couple of weeks they should be tough as.

Ever since I got out of school and working for real my hands are rough and ready for everything... I use to bleed on the palms after real long sessions, not anymore!

I'm now back in Tassie, it's about 10 degrees, the water's probably not much better, I'll see if the hands toughen up again.
