just need few info from eastern states sailors. For wave sailing in Sydney, Is it better to live near the north or South beaches? where are the best wave sailing spots? if any wind?
NE go to Wanda north carpark, locally its called green hills. If northside Long Reef has been disappointing for a number of years. It does get a light NE and small swell. It's actually better to sail when its SE and South. Northside Newport reef can be all time when big Sth Swell and SE winds - a bit rocky but worth it. There are other spots but these are the 3 starting points. Tim
North Steyne at Manly used to be great for cross onshore, but seems to suffer the same fate that Long Reef has with gusty NNE replacing solid NE seabreezes. Manly at least gets whatever swell there if it's from the NE unlike Long Reef which seems to be flat most of the time. The south side of Newport in Strong Southerlies looks to have great potential. I've only sailed there once and wind inshore was a bugger. Also a spot most wouldn't think of is the Basin at the North end of Mona Vale in Southerly winds. Smooth water inshore and waves breaking on a reef outside. I've only sailed there twice and was underpowered both times, but still managed to get out in half mast high. It's got real potential.
I too have heard great things about Wanda/Green Hills from a mate that lived down that way for a while.
Try Wollongong. It's just south of Sydney and has some excellent beaches. In the northern suburbs you can sail at Sandon Point in a NE wind, or on the next point south known as Peggies in a southerly. Both breaks are on the leeward side of the wind so the water is smooth with peeling waves that wrap around the point. Further south there is also East Corrimal, Windang and Gerroa. I sailed East Corrimal alone for years before I moved to Perth, the conditions are excellent, just don't annoy the local surfers.
Spot on. I just moved to East Corrimal, and it goes off. As does the rest of the area as most guys over here would know.
As for Sydney, southside is best for NE breezes. I prefer the northern beaches for southerlies though. Just as strong and more options for great wave sailing. Newport Reef will blow your mind on a good day. Makaha (right hander off the northern side of Long Reef headland) is awesome. Plenty of locals to sail with too. Long Reef can be frustrating with NE'rs. When they tend to go more north then the north end of Newport beach is great too.
Northside is definitely the nicer spot to live, but you'll sail more in summer on the southeside, and being so close to Wollongong is a huge bonus. Just move to Wollongong. About 5 times cheaper than living in Sydney (yet still under an hour away), and epic wavesailing.
