ah yes thats what I was thinking, because I mainly sailed on flat, I always went hook up, but I find it is a bit hard to unhook in a hurry.

I've always gone hook down. I generally think it's better to sometimes have trouble hooking in(never happens) than having possible trouble unhooking.

The norm is certainly down, at least 90% of people go that way. In fact I can't recall ever seeing anyone use the hook up except in photo's from overseas (mostly pro's).
Josh Stone goes hook up and I asked him once why and his response was pretty much 'personal preference'.

Then I thought about it and I can't see any plus to the hook up approach. Really, hook down means:

Easier to hang your weight down on the boom when shlogging or only just barely planing and want to stay on the plane / upwind.
Easier to unhook when you really need to do it fast: just pull boom in towards you and the line drops free.
Easier to hook in... lean in til line touches just below the hook and drop your body down. I think hook up is probably harder but maybe you get used to it?
Most bad wave **** ups mean the gear stops and your body keeps moving, like a catapault. You kinda unhook automatically much of the time. Or you look like me ......
Almost all tricks or flash moves involve air time, so I guess if you wanna try them hooked in it is easier hook down to hang you weight off the boom.

Anyone for hook up, I don't get it

The theory of hook up, if my dim dark memory serves me correctly, was if you feel you are going to catapult you just bend at the waist and the harness line is ripped out the top rather than giving you the ol' toss over the nose.
It probably made sense when lines were nothing more than a piece of rope tied to the boom.
These days with the stiffer harness lines, just releasing the weight on the boom lets the line fall free which is probably a much safer option.

thanks for the info boys!

looks like Id better go swing that hook from up to down

I was first shown hook up 12 yrs ago by an old school windsurfer that taught me, and have just used that since, but always, always struggle with the unhook when the wind gusts then stops, and you want to unhook! so time for change

thanks again

One advantage of hook up is that there is no chance of catching a harness line with the hook during a jibe.
On occasions while wave sailing I have found that the hook would catch a line during the transition, you then get pulled over the front, not a good look. This doesn't happen when the hook is up.

I use hook up exclusively while sailing and down with kites. It comes down to personal preference.

lol, who is the goose!

ME!!!!

got my harness out of the car today, guess what, hook down!!!!!

bugger me, I have always sailed hook down, for some reason my brain's left side, got confused with the right, and the up and the down!

so lesson learned, never ask me for directions!

I feel it is kind of like what hand do you hold your fork with? unless you have a fork in your hand you may not know!

I sailed hook-up when I was a poley.
I changed to hook-down when I started kiting.
That's why I can't go back to windsurfing, the harness is wrong.

Hey Greeny, Im both
Im probably one of about 2 guys here in Sydney that sail hook up.
It was the way the first chest harness had the plastic hook (no spreader bar back then) when I purchased it.
Never saw the need for change and I dont even think about it these days. Saw a few "uppers" on Maui recently so now i dont feel so left out.
Its just personal preference, plus "downers" are usually video store hangers anyway.
