4.7 wave - just bought this (came with board) never used this so i asume anything 25 knots and over if i decide not to sell it. will use on new 85L board and 100L.

5.0 wave - this has been my smallest sail for many years and used it for prity much anything 20 knotts and over. Has always got a bit out of control for me but hopefully that will be better now i've got a 4.7. Will use on new 85L board and have been using on 100L.

5.3 wave - just bought this to (came with board) never used it and going to sell it because theres no use for it i don't think.

5.8 wave - use this in 15 knotts until i can use the 5.0. have been using it on 100L board and 114L board.

6.5 freeride/race - 10 knotts up. Use it with 100L, 114L and 158L boards depending on conditions and where i'm sailing.

7.0 freeride race - anything below 10 knotts with either 114L or 158L boards depending on the winds.

Ovcourse these are all not exact it just depends on the day and how i'm feeling aswell.

I'm a bit like you jord and it seems that i'm using larger or same size sails as guys who are 10-20kg heavier than i am. Lots of the time it's because i havnt had any smaller sails to use and that 5.0 has had the crap kicked out of it quite often. My brothers even worse than me with choosing bigger sails than i am. I also are only just moving onto boards under the 100L mark so we'll see how that goes.

One question: is there going to be much differenece between my 5.0 and the 4.7 i just bought or is it not realy worth keeping? I've already decided the 5.3 is goin to be prity usless and i want to have as little sails as possible because i don't want to spend half my sailing time deciding what to rig.

Going from having a large quiver, I am now experimenting with a minimalist theory.

1 board which is a 115L JP Freeride with a selection of fins.

3 sails

• 7.5 North R-Type - for when it's not very windy
• 5.8 North Power Wave - for when it's windy
  
• 4.7 Ezzy Wave SE - for when it's really windy

At 90kgs that combo works for me in all but light winds, otherwise I go fishing.

That's the inherent problem with a one board quiver, at the extremes of wind range you must compromise handling. To control bounce on the bigger board I tend to rely on technique and set up to apply more Mast foot pressure than usual. It's about playing the game of averages, I can enjoy most conditions with my one chosen board. On a positive note, I find the bigger board glides through the lulls better, even when it's blowing hard in Queensland there are big lulls

It's a pretty "ecclectic" collection made up of a bunch of stuff that I have gathered through buying different sets of gear and trading sails and stuff. I also moved from Auckland (big sheltered harbour, light wind, flat(ish) water to Taranaki with waves, waves, and more waves, and plenty of wind when it decides to turn up at all, so I've been filtering out my bigger gear in favor of wave stuff. Freeride is still good fun (and more local for me.. not that a 20 minute drive to Pungarehu or Waitara is a long way!) so I've held on to a bit of stuff for that.

Bubs - I've found that my 5.0 and 4.7 are pretty close when powered - my 4.7 has wider wind range though as the 5.0 is a purist wave sail with a very flat profile when there's no wind on it, while the 4.7 has a bit of preshape built in. Although, that said, I haven't run the Naish on a proper constant curve mast yet, so getting it off the NP soft top masts will probably make a big difference to it!

i use my 6.5 for 10-15 knots.
5.8 for 15-20.
5.2 for 20-25.
4.6 for 25-30.
havent got a 4.2 yet but planning on it for 30-35 ish.
and a 3.8 which barely gets used for anything higher.

Obviously those passionate about their particular discipline may have smaller increments ie Formula races 12.0, 11.0, 10.0. But across the range and inclusive of wave or race I find my gap sizing good. You just change down earlier on wavesails.

The more sails you have, the more time deciding what to use, (usually while the conditions are still changing), the less time you sail.
Just got got to take a punt a lot of the time, I like to be a little over powered if anything so I also tend to have a larger sail than my mates.

With my wave sails I tried to go for a nice uniform gap (0.5m^2) and it works nicely for me. With my weight I find the Ezzys 'rangy' enough that everything is covered. I don't really find the need for anything bigger in the waves as it just gets too big to move around. I can still slog out in 10kts on the 75L/5.2m

I only really use the 8.5 when i'm desperate, I'm usually in the waves :) I use adjustable lines on the 8.5 and 24" on my wave booms. 65kg here

I way 51kg and I use my 9.5 in 35+knots. If its under 35knots I go fishing.

I'm a heavyweight (110kg), so I tend to rig a lot bigger than most.

Debating whether to invest in a 4.7 Renegade as well, but it would only get used in 30k+. I haven't used the 5.3 yet so I think I'll wait and see what kinda range it's got.

Usually I get to the beach, look at what everyone else is rigging and add a metre...seems to work.
