there has been alot of posts about peoples prefrences about harneses and sails, and harness lines etc etc, but i would like to see what kind of sails people use for what winds. and what board volume

for an example i use
4.8 wave for 24to30knotts 69&85 litre
3.8 wave for 30+ 69 litre
5.3 crossover for 20 to 28 100$85 liter
5.8 cross over for 17 to 19 100 liter
6.3 cross over for 15 110&160 litre

main reson is because i seem to use larger sails than every one els, but same boards tho

4.7 wave - just bought this (came with board) never used this so i asume anything 25 knots and over if i decide not to sell it. will use on new 85L board and 100L.

5.0 wave - this has been my smallest sail for many years and used it for prity much anything 20 knotts and over. Has always got a bit out of control for me but hopefully that will be better now i've got a 4.7. Will use on new 85L board and have been using on 100L.

5.3 wave - just bought this to (came with board) never used it and going to sell it because theres no use for it i don't think.

5.8 wave - use this in 15 knotts until i can use the 5.0. have been using it on 100L board and 114L board.

6.5 freeride/race - 10 knotts up. Use it with 100L, 114L and 158L boards depending on conditions and where i'm sailing.

7.0 freeride race - anything below 10 knotts with either 114L or 158L boards depending on the winds.

Ovcourse these are all not exact it just depends on the day and how i'm feeling aswell.

I'm a bit like you jord and it seems that i'm using larger or same size sails as guys who are 10-20kg heavier than i am. Lots of the time it's because i havnt had any smaller sails to use and that 5.0 has had the crap kicked out of it quite often. My brothers even worse than me with choosing bigger sails than i am. I also are only just moving onto boards under the 100L mark so we'll see how that goes.

One question: is there going to be much differenece between my 5.0 and the 4.7 i just bought or is it not realy worth keeping? I've already decided the 5.3 is goin to be prity usless and i want to have as little sails as possible because i don't want to spend half my sailing time deciding what to rig.

Cheers

I have:

4.7 ezzy wave se, used in strong wind and only used with my 79lt so far
5.3 session, used from about 18-25knts, used on my 94lt and my 79lt hopefully on my new 100lt as well
6.2 boxer, used in 10-20knts, useable on all my boards as well
7.3 north, was used with my formula board but board sold. don't use it much as I find I can plane, jump, etc on my 6.2 and my old 94lt in about 12 knts.

I think the gap between a 5.0 and 4.7 will be quite small depending on the type of sails they are and their natural wind range. But that will come down to personal prefference. I know people with 3.7 4.0 4.2 4.7 5.0 5.3 now that a hell of allot of sails and in any given wind he has like 3 sails to choose from.

Going from having a large quiver, I am now experimenting with a minimalist theory.

1 board which is a 115L JP Freeride with a selection of fins.

3 sails
  • 7.5 North R-Type - for when it's not very windy
  • 5.8 North Power Wave - for when it's windy
  • 4.7 Ezzy Wave SE - for when it's really windy

At 90kgs that combo works for me in all but light winds, otherwise I go fishing.

Knotty, i'm trying real hard to cut down at the moment. ideally i want 2 boards, 4 sails (6.4 to 4.2).. more likely to be 3 and 5, but i'm trying

how do you go on a 4.7 on a 115 at 90kg too,i'd normally go 80 or 87 on this size and sometimes with my smallest 20cm fin on the 87 it gets a bit too bouncy!!!

must be that QLD crazy wind again

Windy,
That's the inherent problem with a one board quiver, at the extremes of wind range you must compromise handling. To control bounce on the bigger board I tend to rely on technique and set up to apply more Mast foot pressure than usual. It's about playing the game of averages, I can enjoy most conditions with my one chosen board. On a positive note, I find the bigger board glides through the lulls better, even when it's blowing hard in Queensland there are big lulls

4.5m Nth Voodoo........Waves
5.0m NP Search..........Waves
5.8m NP Search..........Waves
6.6m NP Soul.............Waves
4.9m NP Supersonic....Speed (high wind)
6.2m NP RS4..............Speed
6.7m NP RS4..............Speed
7.5m Ezzy Reed Rad....Light wind Cruising
9.0m Arrows Dragster..Light wind (Knackered now roting in the corner)

Have no idea what wind speed I use them on, generally rig what I can hang onto as I'm a lazy basket who hates slogging and pumping.

4.7 North wave (2004) when the squashed air is really honking.(over 25-30knots)
5.6 NP zone (2003) model when the squashed air is good.(20-25)
6.6 Loft freeride (2007)average squashed air (15-20)
7.4 Loft freeride (2007)average to soft squashed air (12-18)
8.2 North Crossfire (2004)when its low squashed air (10-15)
All measured off seabreeze site. No idea what it actual number is with wind meter
Bit like Elmo, go big so it can pull me up on water starts. If it dont, I am set too small

  • 4.2 Naish ?? when the sand stings your ankles 25 plus kts, 76 litre wave board
  • 4.7 Yes "WaveOn" when the seagulls are flying sideways 17-25, 76 litre
  • 5.0 Naish "Malu" for freestyle or when the 4.7 is getting fixed, 76 litre
  • 5.7 NP Expression/Gaastra Pulse/NP MPR on a 104 litre freestyle board for marginal planing wave days, and beach sailing on a mountainboard, 11-20 kts
  • 7.0 HotSails Formula D for freeride in 17-25 kts (104 or 121 litre boards)
  • 8.0 North Warp for freeride in 10-17 knots (121 litre board)

It's a pretty "ecclectic" collection made up of a bunch of stuff that I have gathered through buying different sets of gear and trading sails and stuff. I also moved from Auckland (big sheltered harbour, light wind, flat(ish) water to Taranaki with waves, waves, and more waves, and plenty of wind when it decides to turn up at all, so I've been filtering out my bigger gear in favor of wave stuff. Freeride is still good fun (and more local for me.. not that a 20 minute drive to Pungarehu or Waitara is a long way!) so I've held on to a bit of stuff for that.

Bubs - I've found that my 5.0 and 4.7 are pretty close when powered - my 4.7 has wider wind range though as the 5.0 is a purist wave sail with a very flat profile when there's no wind on it, while the 4.7 has a bit of preshape built in. Although, that said, I haven't run the Naish on a proper constant curve mast yet, so getting it off the NP soft top masts will probably make a big difference to it!

I'm 85kg

I use:
3.7m NP Combat with 73L JP Pro Wave for 35 knots+
4.2m NP Combat with 73L JP Pro Wave or 83L Freestyle Wave for 28-35knots
4.7m NP Combat with 83L JP Freestyle Wave for 23-30knots
5.4m NP Alpha with 83L JP Freestyle Wave or 99L JP Freestyle Pro for 18-25knots
6.1m NP Expression with 99L JP Freestyle Pro for 13-20 knots

I've had a similar setup for a few years now and it's totally sick for Freestyle, Waves and cruising. I love it!

I'm 70kg
Avalon Sail Co 5.3 wave 12-25knt with 90l wavewands new style waveboard
A.S.C 4.7 wave 18-30kn with 75l wavewands high wind waveboard
A.S.C. 4.2 wave 25+kn with above board.

For high wind blasting I was also using the wave sails 5.3 20-30kn,
4.7 25-35kn 4.2 30+kn

At the moment I have the use of an A.S.C. 5.7 twin cam recut speed sail.
I'm using that with a variety of race/slalom/speed boards, from 15-30kn.
Still haven't worked out the best wind strength to change down from the twin cam to a wave sail.

Al (and everyone else in Melbourne)
The 2008 JP/NP gear is arriving this week - get down to SHQ to check it out or see it in the Windsurfing Movie on Friday night at the kiosk (Al sucks that you'll miss it - let me know if you want to check it out some time)

As far as I can tell, the best gap to have between sails is about 20%.
So you start with your favourite sail, then go 20% up and down to fill out your quiver.

For example, let's say you've got an awesome 5.0 sail. So your ideal range would be:
4.2
5.0
6.0
7.2
8.6

You can base these calculations on any other sail of course. And you can miss the optimum size by a small amount without making too much difference.

Bump & Jump and hopefully some waves this summer-
4.0 Aerotech Charge (just put deposit on)
4.7 Pryde MPR
5.3 KA Kaos
6.2 North Style

Speed, Slalom, Formula-
4.7 Pryde MKIII (spare)
4.8 Gaastra Slalom Pro
5.4 Aerotech VMG
6.7 Aerotech VMG
7.8 North Daytona
8.3 North IQ (spare)
10.0 North Daytona

My sail size calculations are not done on percentages.
12-8.0m 2.0m
8-5.5m: 1.1m
5.5-4.0: 0.7m

Obviously those passionate about their particular discipline may have smaller increments ie Formula races 12.0, 11.0, 10.0. But across the range and inclusive of wave or race I find my gap sizing good. You just change down earlier on wavesails.

MMMMMM.
The more sails you have, the more time deciding what to use, (usually while the conditions are still changing), the less time you sail.
Just got got to take a punt a lot of the time, I like to be a little over powered if anything so I also tend to have a larger sail than my mates.

I used to have two boards and 3 sails, now it's 1 of everything, when I roll up at the beach, I just gota work out down & out haul
I also went from slalom/race gear to freeride, life's simple.

I'm 80Kg, and because I sail in mostly gusty 12 to 25 knots 99% of the time, I find a 100L board and a 6.6 does me good. Ocean goes rough and choppy when wind picks up, no waves, wouldn't know a wave if I tripped over it.

So it's only a Ezzy 6.6 Infinity

8.5m Ezzy Infinity + Hypersonic 8-20kts

5.2m Ezzy Wave SE '07 10(slog)-25kts, RRD Wave Cult 75L/F2 Maui Project 105L

4.7m Ezzy Wave SE '07 25-35kts, RRD 75L

4.2m Ezzy Wave SE '07 30kts +, RRD 75L

With my wave sails I tried to go for a nice uniform gap (0.5m^2) and it works nicely for me. With my weight I find the Ezzys 'rangy' enough that everything is covered. I don't really find the need for anything bigger in the waves as it just gets too big to move around. I can still slog out in 10kts on the 75L/5.2m

I only really use the 8.5 when i'm desperate, I'm usually in the waves :) I use adjustable lines on the 8.5 and 24" on my wave booms. 65kg here

I'm a heavyweight (110kg), so I tend to rig a lot bigger than most.

For speed...Kinetic Gladiator 115 + KA Koncepts...
12-18k - 7.5
18-25k - 6.6
25k+ - 5.8.

Just got some new wave kit...SSD custom circa 105L + some new Severnes...
18-25k - 6.4 S2
25k+ - 5.3 Renegade

Debating whether to invest in a 4.7 Renegade as well, but it would only get used in 30k+. I haven't used the 5.3 yet so I think I'll wait and see what kinda range it's got.

Usually I get to the beach, look at what everyone else is rigging and add a metre...seems to work.
