had a first sail in a long time at the alley on the weekend, but struggled in the gusty conditions due to lack of fitness!

where else in SEQ or Nth NSW is worth a look in a S'E and has the possibility of some waves?

g'day Matt, mate ive given up windsurfing the beaches in these "iffy" south easters, I have decided to mainly wait for the summer north easterlies to return. So, in the meantime, myslef and a few other wave guys windsurf at Shearwater park in Runaway Bay, while the wind was swirling around at the alley, we were overpowered with 5.0 sails for 4 hours straight! Big wind chop, no waves but big enough ramps to launch some decent jumps. Im more into being powered up all the time, i get the sh1ts floundering around in gusty on and off winds on the beaches. So, until the summer breezes return, you will find me at shearwater.

Look at a refidex, its off the end of Lae drive Runaway Bay.

Another good point is when it blows, there is always a keen crew out.

I found Queens beach Redcliffe was excellent on saturday, nice and consistent using a 4.5 sail 75litre board. Not really wave riding but good for jumping. Sunday was a little less but still managed to use a 4.5. Actually 2 days in a row on 4.5 is a recorded for me in Qld.

Its interesting hearing session reports, I'll drive anywhere between Currumbin and Caloundra searching for wind. So any info is good info.

Hey Goldy68,

I feel your pain.

From north to south:
Redcliffe - rolling swell
Wellington Pt - Big bay but you've got to be careful at low tide
Victoria Pt - Good speed strip at low tide, Haircut posted a good video showing the choppy conditions when the tide's up a bit.
Shearwater - Catches the southerly the best out of most spots on the gold coast. Awesome in a runout tide. If wind is marginal and tide is coming in then don't bother, you'll end up doing the big walk.
The train - Good speed strip, but if it's any further south than SE then forget it (gusty). Good when the tide's wrong at shearwater.
Miami (waves) - Wind must be SE or more East. Waves aren't too gnarly.
Currumbin Alley (waves, with flatter water inside) - Wind must be SE, and 20-25 knots measured at the airport before I'll go out. Too flukey otherwise.
Tweed Golf course - Short run, but good if you don't want to drive to Southport. I was out there today (with too big a sail
Kingscliff (waves) - Checked it out but haven't sailed there yet. Waves look quite nasty, not sure I've got the cajones to take it on just yet.
Flat rock, Ballina (waves) - This is a legendary spot for windsurfing, I haven't sailed it but on the right day apparently it fires up.

Those are the spots I've sailed at (except for Kingscliff and Flat rock), there are rumours of others. If you're keen to meet up then I'd like to check out some new spots south of the border for a change, most of the crew on this forum sail from Southport north.

guys, thanks for those awesome suggestions! I've never tried shearwater but I might give it a shot. i don't have anything against flat water spots but as I have only wave gear I tend to feel like a bit of a goose as the slalom dudes go whizzin by. glad to know shearwater isn't just a speed strip (which is what I thought).

Nebs, I'm certainly up for some exploring, and I've been flicking through my ancient "Surfing & Windsurfing Guide to Oz" for some clues. I really wanna check out Flat Rock, tried to get there years ago and despite some excellent directions, got hopelessly lost! I'm down around Byron a lot so I must go for a hunt...

All we need now is a real-time google earth... ;-)

cheers and thanks again!

hi goldy68,

don't worry about only having wave gear at the flatish water spots. on saturday at Victoria point there was only one guy on dedicated slalom gear. almost everyone else was on wave/freestyle gear.

another place worth a look if you are up for the drive north is suttons beach at redcliffe.

in a SE it gets waves. not like waves on the open beaches but they are heaps of fun. can be up to 1m when it;s been blowing for a couple of days. suttons can be a bit fickle during a southerly though.
