someone once told me the material costs for a new NP sail - (it wasn't much) - so how come they get from a few quid up to nearly a grand???

I just totalled up my gear - and to buy new would cost $15,000+ but like so many people 75% is 2nd hand and the new stuff was all last yrs model.

Yep i know there must be a load of other costs for the manafacturer like R/D, payroll, taxes, transport, sponsership, marketing etc etc

Then there is wholesalers/distribution and our beloved windsurfing shops who have their own costs and have to make a few quid as well.

Are these prices a supply/demand thing - if there were 10 times as many people in the sport would we be paying half the prices???

who is getting the biggest slice of the pie???

I just want to but some new shiny gear

I don't hold the same view... U can't look at products just on materials cost or we'd all be buying Nike's for $2. In actual fact windsurfing gear has come down in price in the past 10 years or so. I have some old Sailboard Extra magazines from 1991 and they have Bic Adagio (Slalom board) for sale at $1999 in an ad. $1999 back then is like $3000 now.

The trick wih windsurfing (if u windsurf alot) is to buy good quality gear that will last and hold good resale value. For example I bought a Chinook Carbon wave boom ($750) at least 7 years ago and it's still going strong. My mate has bought 3 aluminium booms in that time ($250 each) and I guarantee he will be on his 4th before mine gives way. I'll buy an Ezzy sail knowing I could get a solid 5 years out of the sail with the odd repair and still get a coupla hundred for it when I trade it in. But maybe u do this already... ;)

Cheers Paul.

windsurfing gear is cheap by comparison. I stopped competing in Hobie cats when my new one would cost $25,000 plus $10,000 a year to maintain and campaign.
gear is so priced "Because it is worth every cent"

I agree that gear is expensive, and i also agree that its worth the fun. What I dont like is manufacturers going around in circles every few years with designs: concaves - no concaves, wide - thin - wide, tall masts, short masts etc etc. I bet $10 that the next great thing will be from the past, and another $10 says twin fins will come back.
And stuff isnt made to last so much anymore. Take the bomboras for example, bullet proof and hard as steel compared to modern boards. But thats like everything these days, its like we rent things rather than buy them because we have to keep replacing everything.
I buy used gear thats a few years old and save a fortune, and generally keep up with other sailors on the water (but my stuff isnt as shiny).
Sometimes its embarrasing like at the windang comp last month i pulled out the bombora 275, against everyone's new stuff, thats like driving a VW to a formula 1 comp! still had fun. Got a starboard 186 in great cond for $100 the other day!

Qwerty. I had the petrol. But also had minus three days annual leave. Other than that, would have been there. I really have to stop working. It is getting in the way of living. Too much fun to be had.

Expensive magazine, I bought 3 94/95 Course slalom pros 5.2, 6.2, 7.2 and all up in cost me $2200.
Sailworks race sails at the time were around the $650 mark.
Fibrespar 3000 '95 cost around $350-400 I think.

I remember when the VX was released (strange there was so much more hype back then with the VX and Ltd.) what was shocking at the time was they were over $1000 the most expensive sail on the market until the North 3DL was released. I think the North Prisma's were the next most expensive in '95 at $800-1000.

60% Masts were hell expensive in 94-95, I guess the reliable tech wasnt all that old. Masts will jump up shortly due to increased carbon costs and demand (has jumped up 40% apparently thanks to Mr Bush's agenda).

Regarding costs retailer's mark up around 20-30%. You've then got the importer, distributer, manufacturing company, parent company and taxman all taking cuts. This is why windsurfing sales practice works on keeping costs down.

Materials- when a local sailmaker was making sails here last year it was costing him close to $500 in materials (battens and tensioners are very expensive), so he didnt really see the point when you could buy last years sail brand new for $600. Obviously big companies it would cost bugger all in materials and even less in sweat shop labour.

Seems the sails like Gunn and Loft, etc. are getting into the high volume low cost production theme. They are around 40% cheaper than the other brands. Are they as good? Buy one new for just over $400 and find out !!! (I'm happy with mine.)

Regards,
Harrow.

I think it has less to do with high volume, low cost production and more to do with deleting importer and distributer (since retailer covers all these roles) and the subsequent 5 lots of tax .

Maybe Gun are owners and manufacturers too (German made) which helps keep costs down although surely thailand sweatshop wages are lower than german wages, but I suppose this is off set by multiple imports, exports, quality control etc.

I think you will find loft will soon come into line with industry standard prices, most of the cuts seem like an introductory thing and incentive for the brand to catch on.

the main reason for price increases has been the cost of oil....

anything based on oil is more expensive.
