am bout to upgrade to a wider board by at least 10cm hopefully at the same volume being 111ltrs. and my mates keep on telling me to go 95ltrs. since it could still carry my max limit of 7.5mtr. sail..i keep on telling them logic tells me if the wind drops i lose a few knots but on a lower volume board even with width you lose a lot of knots..so the ending is i can't get this four honchos to agree with me i already have a 95 and 111 should be okay for medium winds and that a bigger sail doesn't give me harder wind..yes it should plane easy but i believe the bigger should even do better...yes

Yeah bigger should do better off the plane. It's hard to sail a submarine.

Yep, I basically agree also, unless the 95 litres is enough to float you with the deck of the board out of the water.
As long as the deck, with high drag footstraps, is well out of the water, extra volume won't make much difference, may even just add extra weight and slow you down!
But extra width, will of course make a difference.

I think the answer is a bit more complicated. If the 95 liter board has a lot of water coming over the top of the deck when shlogging, compared to the 111, then it will be appreciably slower. But if the 111 doesn't carry you high off the water the difference probably won't be that much.

What do you weigh?

At 75Kg I replaced a 153 liter Bic Techno (69cm wide) with a 109 liter JP Freestyle (69cm wide). Until the wind gets below about 8 knots there's no difference in shlogging the two. Even when there is a difference, the lower volume board is a lot more fun to sail planing.

It would be great if you could take the 95 liter board out for a shlog to determine how unhappy it would make you.

^^^ What he said.

I am over 85kgs and was riding, for a while, a 100lt 67cm wide slalom board. As the board was carrying me out of the water even when not plaining there was very little value in going for more volume.

The fastest and most fun in given conditions for shortboard sailing will be the board that just gets you by.
