i observed the windspeed and direction for gold coast seaway and coolangatta since a while and was wondering why gc seaway gets always much more. looks at the map not like there should be a big difference.
are windconditions in corrumbin and coolangatta the same?
what wind is good to go sailing down there?
cheers

The Seaway meter is on a rock wall in the ocean. The Coolangatta tower is at the airport. This is why the seaway reads too big and Coolie underdone in a southerly(it waffles behind the hills). You will notice the reverse in a northerly. SE is the right direction for Currumbin. The gusts at the Coolie tower will be the average at Currumbin. But wind is only half the equation for wavesailing.

The Oxford dictionary definition of a Currumbin

Currumbin - 1. A brief gust of wind 2. A place where sailors go to stand and look at the water 3. A good place for building card houses and balancing pencils on their ends

Aboriginal meaning for Currumbin - marsupial fart

i'm qualified to reveal this because i live there

OK Haircut. Time to stop bagging Currumbin. Some of us would rather sail waves. The last 3 years have been very good down there. You would not know, because you are never there. The few who hang there swear by it. And we get more than enough. We dont bag the Broadwater except to say that it is bloody boring.

ESE or SE when its a bit stronger. its gotta be really onshore at narrowneck. its a usually about 3-5 knots less than Narrowneck unless its more ESE. its been good over the past few years but i don't think its really really pumped for a few years. well not like i remember it in the last century. just my 2 cents :)

...nice one Mr T. So that rules out Southerlys...and if it gets too big one may mumble something about the need for steroids (quote/unquote)

seems to be the general opinion that wind was better many years ago. Even only 4 to 5 years ago when i first started sailing there it seemed to have better wind in either direction. Maybe I just fluked it at the time.

Please feel free to bag the broadwater as much as you like

anyway, I hope there is at least one days worth of non - currumbin esque' wind left for the competition

It is starting to seem the comp might be a little "should have been here yesterday". Unless that se sticks around, or fades early and another arrives. But at least the wind is finally kicking. As for narrowneck, i tend to drive to flat rock when the breeze is too south for Currumbin.
