But you have to put it together peice by piece from maybe 2 or 3 different stores/ private sellers you rarely see a whole beginner's kit for sale together... unless it is crap 1980's stuff

BUT like I always say if they are motivated, not big n fat (so 100L will float them well) and it is a windy place where they'll go out 3x a week for 3 or 4 months, then you can use smaller / much older gear and cut the cost down a lot. You could start on a early 1990's slalom board and one sail for $500 if you shopped well.... and then 3 yrs later win the GPS challenge for speed sailing on the same kit. Could.

Careful with ebay windy. Dont just let him go bidding without advice. There's a heap of overpriced dross on there.

the windsurfing rig isnt for my brother its for a friend who wants to get into windsurfing (he lives right on the water at thompsons)

Maybe we could all chip in and donate some gear we dont use anymore and get more young people into our sport. I know when i was a kid it was so hard to get windsurfing kit its not like you can pull money out of you know where. How old is your freind windykid

This idea of a windsurfing library/free gear was floated here a couple of years ago...(QLD I think) for exactly that reason, I'm not sure what happened with it, but haven't heard anything since?!?

I think the issue was that for beginners, old gear would possibly turn them off, instead of encouraging them, and anything relatively new would still be valuable to the owners.

yep, the windwanderers gear library is in full swing.

we have gear donate by members, mostly slalom kit but we are now in posession of quite a few masts and sails.

a lot of the gear is out and about.

we were also donated a kids rig from starboard which has seen lots of use and this season we will be organising a go.

when starboard donated the kids rig it was always the intention to follow up with a go setup for beginners. we just needed to do a small amount of fundraising on our side. we are now ready to look into getting the board again.

basically membership fees go towards the scheme.

it really is something needed up here in qld. we have had a lot of new people who are dissadvantaged by not having learner gear. at the womens windsurfing meet we organised last year 8 girls and 6-7 kids turned up. we used the starboard kids rig and other gear donated on the day from surfFX and caloundra wind and surf.

problem was the follow up wasn't available as we hadn't managed to finalise a bginner board for the library by that stage.
