I'd be keen to know too, going after New Year's. There are some very nice freshwater lakes, but some of them look like they may be very protected from the wind.

many years ago i sailed from inskip point to fraser island, near where the car ferry goes from. then i lost my spreader bar, and then i was told how many chompies frequent the channel , so i didnt sail there again. i was only camping in the area and thought it looked sailable, so i did.

I was there 10 years ago.
Not a single windsurfer in sight but lots of sharks. Big ones. Right up to the beach.
On the east side there is a channel close to shore and a sandbank about 50 to 100 metres offshore, similar to Scarborough beach in WA.
First day there i ignored the signs and went for a body surf over the banks as there was a good little wave. I didnt get eaten.
But later that day or maybe next I saw big sharks close in to shore where i had been swimming.
The sharks patrol the channel close to shore and steal the fish off the fishers as they reel them in.
Many signs there saying "Sharks on Fraser Island" are there for a reason.
I didn't go in again.

Nice pick-up Knotboard. I had read that article before I went to Fraser. Amazing fishing.

But crikey, answer Junoir's question! He's after wave/wind conditions! Not info about the likelihood of ending up as tiger shark tucker. Actually Junior, if you contacted the guys in Knotboard's article, I reckon they'd be happy for you to tow their bait out to sea for them. I just want to see the video footage. I sispect your speed sailing and gybing would improve enormously.

Years ago there use to be a marathon race from Tin Can BAy to Fraser Island and back - i think Steve Allen won it a few times. there is plenty of good areas around fraser but might be better up near kingfisher bay resort area , but areas around fraser are well known for the large fish that swim close to shore ! If you get eaten well bad luck, if you sail it and survive then your a true legend

Can't be any worse than "Cactus"
I sailed Sunshine Coast open beaches for years and i reckon every 2nd or 3rd time i was out i sailed over a bronzy or a tiger, even had a large tiger swim right past me in the Noosa river mouth when i was water starting. I think Frazer and morten attract more sharks because the gutters aren't fished out like the populated beaches so hopefully the aren't hungry for humans . Frazer has got potential in a northerly seabreeze for cross shore wave sailing. In a south east your better off in the sandy straights (inland side). But tides can make it difficult you can sail for a cupla hours and end up dragging your kit for half a k through the mud to get back to shore or worse still do a face plant catapult onto an oyster bed...ouch!

I sailed years ago on Lake McKenzie, but that was before they changed the road/parking area to give the tourist buses the close access to the lake. Now I think its too popular and too far a distance to carry your gear down to the lake. Not sure about the other lakes for sailing though. We have also swum in the Ocean, but beware as the sharks come right into the beach.

But I'll be over there between Xmas and New Years.
