There was a healthy population of friendly guys and girls up there last September, that welcomed me to their favourite spot (the train) for the two weeks that I was up there on holidays. I think Justin is a regular up there and also on Seabreeze often. Looking forward to joining them again this September on holidays. Regards to Neil B and Neil W if you are reading this...

Yes their are waves sailing still here Its not the best time in the year for it.

We get out at currumbin or kings cliff s/se, south winds Main Beach or noddeys Beach, N Currumbin Kirra Kingscliff ,NE Curgan reef. West winds tack out a surf board.

As for the tea bags I have not seen to many lately as we seem to be sail with abit to much offshore wind for them

G'day all. I see the locals have finally made it onto the forum

Does anyone know who is who here?

Hi Eckas. I'm tring to work out who you are??

As for "The Train" aparently the council doesn't want to maintain it any more and it will be taken away. So what will we call it now? Some folk suggested calling it:

- Jurassic Park
- The Puddle
- The Sh!t Hole
- Gay Bay

What has happened to all the kitesurfers this year? Their numbers have declined dramatically over the last 18 months, right along the coast. There are a handfull of beginners at the shearwater and maybe one or two at most of the spots on the beach where there used to be 20 at a time.

Tiz Justin here.

Hi Justin.

I was up there last September, sailing a fanatic stingray with a 7.4 NP diablo most days. Didn't get to meet you personally, but got to know the two Neil's and a few others who mentioned you were the local winsurfer/web guru. When the 7.4 got overpowered, I took some action photos of all you guys, then mailed the CD of pictures up to Neil Walsh who was meant to circulate to you all. We shall meet again this September if all goes to plan....this time I'll have a 5.8 in the kit so I won't have to bail so early when the rest of you are just getting excited.
Cheers...
Eckas.

fk the train.. crap whole it is.. brown flat water... ****ing use the ocean ... it may require some more energy but it's so much better.. if you like to just cruise you can't get a big enough run.. and for everything else it's just too flat..

but that's just me.. i don't mean to spoil it for you if you like but.. i just like blue and surf.. also you see marine life when in the sea

hi again.

Hi Tony, didn't realise it was you. (hey, never go into wintermode :D)I got out sunday week ago for quite a good southeasterly. Hey wan't it your suggestion to call the train "Jurassic Park"?

Hi Eckas. Now I know who you are. Speaking of Neil, he just called me this evening. Neil W gave me your cd full of photos and i was getting around to putting them on the website that i was getting around to completing, that was gonna be one day....when i gettaroundtooit. They were great shots you took too! Will be nice to meet you next time you are up.

Vando, gps frenzy seems to have hit the train too. I think Paul recorded 38-ish knots on a good run. Its generally those guys who can't yet gybe who wear them while sailing.....if ya get what i mean (paul can gybe tho)

G'day mr Curac.

Tell me about it vando.. the wello guys tell me that if its predicted 10-15 knots at Wello pt. don't bother going down there... cuz its about 5-10 knots less than that always... if its 15-20, there will be some wind... 20++ its getting heaps better...

If all else fails, call a local shop or get a mates number 2 call n ask if theres any wind there b4 u head down... later

Elizabeth you've got it in one very frustrating.
not to bad for me i only live 5 min from wello.
but often i leave work early only to find that there's no wind.
i alway look at the banana bank wind report but it needs to be 15+ knots before il bother to go down there.this time of year very iffy.

Hi Vando.

Not much wind here the last 2 weeks. The seaway reading is generally at least 5 knots higher than what it really is. To have a reasonable sail at the broadwater, the average seaway reading at the Bureau needs to be 20knots or higher. I'm convinced that they must jack up the reading due to public liability issues.

However - the broadwater/shearwater definately gets the best of the winds on the gold coast. Especially in northerlies. There must be something about the shape of the land or waterway that causes an increase in wind over that area. If it's 15knots at currumbin, it's usually a genuine 5 knots more on the broadwater, and that is measured using my handheld wind meter to compare. Of all the local spots here, the broadwater is your best chance for wind. It even tends to get stronger wind than on the open beach just out the front of the broadwater. It's got me buggered why it works this way??

:)

Cheers

vando - yeah the wind this time of the year is just so unpredictable-- they predicted like 16-20 knots one sunday, and then once the guys and I were all there, there was no wind and only myself, bondo and a few others actually went out...

u live 5 min from Wello... ur so lucky gee... so does a good few of the other kiters there... now that's what I call lucky... I live about 30min drive away... but its not too bad... but then seeing ur a windsurfer, u usually need more wind than the kiters need... i can get out on my 10m Cabrinha in about 13 knots.. but then I am only light...

anways... lets just hope the wind picks up fast!

elizabethb did ya get out on tuesday picked up for about 40min
in the afternoon then it died again i havnt seen so many kiters
down there in a while must desperate for wind like me.
felt a bit lonely though only 2 sailboarders.
I only need about 12knots of wind to get planing i could get bigger gear but its a cost thing and big gear isnt a lot of fun anyway.

No i missed out on Tuesday... the day they give me a uni exam, is on a tuesday isn't it! argh... wouild have been down there if not for the exam... but I work frm 7-5:30 during my uni holiday break so I am full out-- (6 weekds straight; good pay though) -- weekends are the only times spare unless I take time off...

yeah we're all getting that bit desperate lately.. i haven't been out for 2++ weeks.. i think its 3 actually now... its a bummer... but who knows what its fully like there caompared to the prediction.. sometimes its totally wrong anyways ...

yeah about 13 knots will get the kite up, but it floats a bit too much, but stays up at least and give me really good kite saving practice if the wind drops rapidly

ah so ur a windsurfer.... ah shame -- its this forum -- I am a kiter ... well I attempt to kite lol.. still sorting out the board skills... If you see a new red 10m Cabrinha Element kite that will be me down there, so that will be me there.. aka.. usually the only 18 yr old girl there in a wet suit and harness lol

i so hope this weekend picks up from what they predict...

The gold coast is alive. Just in the Ocean thats all. A good day at the Alley can still draw upwards of 15 boards. (a big improvement on 2 years ago). There was also a wave comp in March. 60 entries. As for less wind at Currumbin in a NE breeze. It has to lift over the hill creating a flat spot out the front? Thats my guess?

hi elizabethb.

Most of the photos are from the broadwater between smith st and seaworld from the sandbar in the middle. I stuck the camera in a lunchbox and shoved it down my wetsuit . It offers the flattest water on the goldcoast but its a very narrow strip of water and as a result it becomes a bit of a sh!tfight when there's a couple of dozen windsurfers there + boats + seaplanes + parasailers + jetboats + jetskiers, and worse when you add a kiter to the mix. Unfortunately we just don't have much room on any flat water here. I've been sailing there for three seasons now and pretty much learnt to sail there, and there used to be alot of kiters at the train in the beginning, but they have now moved down about a km further north to Loaders Creek, or 5 km further north at "the shearwater". Both loader's creek and shearwater offer better launching areas for kites. Three years ago every man, dog, and their grandma had a kite, but the kiting scene on the coast seems to have dropped off significantly over the last 18 months. Narrowneck might still get the best turnout on a good day, but overall it seems to have declined in popularity. If you wan't to be sure you are kiting with other kiters, i recommend going to "the shearwater". It's a nice spot and I enjoy sailing there too.

If I had my choice on where to live, it would be wellington pt. I live in currumbin and you would think that I'd be happy being so close to waves, but in reality the wind rarely ever seems to be strong enough to be enjoyable in the surf on a windsurfer. To put it simply - wavesailing on the goldcoast is a "state of mind". We probably get half a dozen fun days per year unless you weigh less than 60kg. The waves are usually messy crap except for currumbin on a south easterly and even then it rarely gets wind from the right direction. I think you guys have got it made up there in wello. It gets rampy enough to do all the tricks that can be done in the surf, big open space, wind from almost any direction, no boats - seaplanes - parasailers - jetboats - jetskiers. Just brown water and a bit of a walk at low tide.....small price to pay for a good days sailing :D

Cheers

Hey Haircut 4000,

hey sounds like a nice flat spot, and obviously ur camera in a lunchbox in ur wetty worked! good idea Yeah its good when u get nice flat water, otherwise I would have my board just dissapearing away from me in the waves... Wow it's certainly busy where u go isn't it! Even seaplanes and jetboats... heck.. all we get at wello are tinny boats, boats, jetskiers , windsurfers and kiters

wow, I can't believe that there were so many where you go and now the numbers have dropped! Maybe they found a better spot and just left! It's good for us that the number of kiters have dropped though, at least then we have a greater chance of getting a park and more space to move around...

Yeah Wello would be definately a nice place to live, but the prices are soaring... $1 million ++ even for a smallish block and place... but it'd be worth it I guess.... or you can get a place on the goldie a few blocks from the waves for about $600 000 I'd say... hmm Wello of coast... Flat water or waves.. tough choice...

quote:
We probably get half a dozen fun days per year unless you weigh less than 60kg

Now thats what I love about being a female kiter... I can go out when there is only about 13 knots with my 10m Cabrinha or just a bit less when the other guys can't get out at all... That's the up side

quote:
I think you guys have got it made up there in wello.

You're not wrong about that... psst... Don't tell anyone else..! We don't need any more ppl here on a sunday... its chockers if u get there are about 1pm... u have to get there early to get a park...
Anyway...
Tomorrow arvo looks like a good one...

Anyways... I love my Cabrinha kite and board Works really well and the safety is beyond brillant...
