hey folks,

i'm a lucky bastard and looking forward to travel australia in the next couple of month. it'll be a tourist thing, too. but mainly i wanna check the surf around oz. i wonder if anyone knows a good guide for windsurfing. something like the stormrider for surfers. i heard of one for europe, but i don't know any for down under.

i think i'll "focus" on the east, south and west coast. so everything that gives me hints and heart warming readings is welcome.

best would be a real book as i wont have laptop on the road.

thanks everyone!

cheers

Wind is where you find it...

On the east coast at least, generally you get better wind down south (eg: Windang, Newcastle) but if you're up around southern Queensland then a good spot guide is here:
http://www.windwanderers.com/website/Locations.html

On the western coast you get really good winds where the trade winds combine with a seabreeze to give you awesome conditions on many days.

The south coast is sparsely populated, and generally pretty wild. Lots of big cliffs, few people, big currents, high populations of Great White Sharks and pretty gnarly. I wouldn't consider it but if you're keen and know what you're doing then it might be OK.

Good luck, drop into an internet cafe when you're here and let us know how you're going

hi hisdudeness.

i got a book called Surfing & Sailboard guide to Australia.

by Nat Young.

it says palm beach press in the front of it.

it is the only book i know of dedicated to windsurfing and surfing around australia and was written off the back of a surf safari from what i can tell.

it is awesome to say the least. slightly outdated now days but still relevant. it was written in 1986. according to a google search it has become a collectors item.

for the gold coast it lists nobby's and narrowneck as the best spots so that is still relevant today.

i also managed to find this link that claims to sell it. www.biblio.com/books/16009568.html

i would get in quick! i can't believe i found a copy.

Yeh that's the book! I was trying to think of it, borrowed a mates copy when we went around the coast in 94. It was a great help, might not have any of the lates discoveries, or real "secret spots" in it, but should give you more than 90% of current wave sailing venues.

yeah it's pretty good for road trips. i got mine around 1990 for an expected road trip but never really made it very far.

it has maps, photos and talks about wind direction and times of year for best conditions. it covers both surfing and windsurfing really well. plus covers flat water and wave sailing locations.

it was this book and the lack of decent information on the web that inspired me to build the windwanderers locations guide.

hi there,

thanks everyone! thats an awesome pool of information. i think i'll get a copy of surfing- and sailboard guide. looks like a really good investment.

also the links seem very detailed. perfect!

and last but not least: i'll definitly contact the locals to have a good session here and there.

next week, well, tomorrow, i'm gonna start working off my ass to pile up as much money as i can and hopefully around christmas i'll hit the road.

so far, thanks again and catch you later!

Mark Warrens Surfing Atlas is good for surf breaks.
I'm sure when your out surfing a break and the wind changes you can decide for yourself if its windsurfable
I also have the Surfing and Sailboard Guide by Nat Young. Its orange and has a photo of the Bluff on the front cover. Pure gold
