A big adventure today that we had been planning for quite a while and it finally came together. 2 boats, Six people, 4 sailors. I wanted to check out the Nautical Mile run at this spot and we thought it would need an Easterly. As it happens, that is correct, but we had a North Easterly and that run was just too broad and choppy. What we did establish though, is that it should fire big time on a true easterly!
So we sailed the next bank south just inside the entrance. Here the wind was almost square, perhaps 10-15 degree biased at best. There was a nice little curve in the bank right at the entrance though which had a bit more steady wind and super flat water on Starboard tack. We started in only 15-18 knots of wind, but it gradually built to 20-22kts with a few 25 gusts by the time the tide changed. When the tide changed it got pressure waves and rolling waves from the sea on it, so I think this is a Ebb tide spot only. It's a great, easy spot to just blast up and down in a NE wind, but would probably be a bit bumpier in 30 knots as it has a gradual sloping bank, making you run about 15m from the sand.
The name? This is the heartland of the Corner Inlet Great White spawning grounds!
Not many gybes were missed today.
I could not sail due to Sciatica, so I put test GPS's - including the new Motion GPS - on one of the others. It didnt really bother me as it was great fun to watch and film, and quite an adventure as well.
The yellow path line is 6km so its about 8km to 'Shark Bait'. The red line is the NM run.
Pics and videos to follow soon.
Geeeez wouldn't want to fall off in those seal suits in the Great White Spawning Grounds!
Thank Christ we don't have to wear those seal suits up here.
Looks "killer"!
Sorry I couldn't make it boys.
The proper speed run looks like heaven in the right direction with a stronger breeze.
Count me in for next time!

All you need is one of these.
Looks good...give me a yell next time.
Low 30s 5x10. I stayed away from the bank as it was just too square and the wind was a bit patchy. My fastest runs were in the middle chasing swell lines and Nm's. More wind there too

or just dont fall in.......
Would you need one for your ankle too?
Wonder if irs gps enabled
Oh yeah that's the look
Wouldn't worry about the "noah's arks" Daffy, you're just a bunch of skinny short arsed old buggers, bit grissly and tough. Not much of a meal. Now if Spotty was out there I reckon they would be salivating, give them something to chew on!
Howd you go with sand flies??
Up at Manns and Kearneys, as soon as you get anywhere out of wind the Sandflies get you.
Soldier Crabs keep you guessing too .......
No Sand Flys on that day, but we were in the wind.
Is the one you refer to as 'Nicol's jetty' the one near Manns Beach or Opposite Robertsons Beach? Both look like possible High tide spots to me on W to NW. Checked them from the shore, but not on the water.
Just NE of Manns is Nicols Jetty. We used to moor our family boat there ...... private land all north of Manns Beach. Hardly any Hog deer .....
No impediment to wind at all from the west, just dead flat tussock country. The tides do ebb and flow quite strongly thro these parts ....
I take Kiters to the east point of Snake island which is other side of channel.
its a magical spot.
but just to make you feel a bit safer,
the great whites drop their pups in January in Singapore deep and Benison channel. Both over 35m deep.
that spot you sailed is just normal sharks
Nice Tony, Thanks for posting.
That one looks to line up best with a SE wind direction which is rare to get at any great strength.
But as you said, there are many, many more possibilities to explore.
BTW, nice boat!
