What would you suggest buying for a first time gps unit.

I've never used one before, but all I want is to find out how fast I've just gone on a run, so I can work out how to go faster. (And to see where my perception diverges from reality.)

Doesn't need to be top of the line, but functional and user friendly.

What models would you suggest? What should I look out for?

A Garmin will do to start with, but as you get better at data analysis you'll discover that the NAVI is a much better unit. You'd be better off getting the NAVI at the start.

Any idea about prices and stockists for the NAVI?

For sailing use you should only consider the Navi's. They have many advantages specifically for windsurfing, especially the GT-31 with its Speed Genie'. Either a GT-31, or if you want a cheaper solution, get a second hand GT-11. There are a few around as many of the more dedicated speeders change over to the GT-31. I have seen GT-11's change hands for somewhere around $100. Try asking around amongst the GPS Team Challenge teams.

Advantages: Huge memory (SD card), long battery life, Speed Genie on GT-31, Compact file format, The only GPS that records the Doppler speed info to file (GT-11 and GT-31) and records an estimate of it's accuracy (GT-31 only). Just to mention some.
