yeah, I'm bored, so I started googling G10.

From what I can make out it is fibreglass/epoxy but "set" (is that the term) under 10 atmospheres of pressure, or Gravity x 10.

How the hell do you get 10 x Gravity without squeezing all the epoxy out?, is it pressed in a mould or is it vacuumed to that pressure?

I think the whole point is to squeeze as much epoxy out as possible to get maximum fibre to resin content. Once the fibers reach their limit of compression no more epoxy can be squeezed out.

I've just made a US base weedy for the other half to use on the estuary, all I had at hand was an anvil and a few boxes of spanners, but even that helps. Must make myself a press.

If you get an absolute vacume you still only have 1 atmosphere pressure so it must be by external pressure.

not sure about fins but lots of hi tech composite structures (eg F1 chassis) are cooked in an autoclave. this allows high temperatures and pressures to be used. pre-impregnated fibres are normally used to give the best resin to fibre ratio.

oh and high pressure doesn't just ensure the optimal resin to fibre ratio, it removes voids in the laminate which are microscopic areas of stress and weakness.
