If you have "memory card" "logger on", the SBN files should start on the card as soon as the unit "finds" the card after turn on.
I think transferring files from the internal data logger to the SD card, is a different operation to logging live readings from the sirf chip to the card. So I don't think that's a valid argument.
So that's a point, if you watch the unit after turn on, does it come up with "card found", then "new file"?
Very interesting both your GT31s do the same, that certainly points to settings.
Have you carefully gone through the recommended set ups to check everything?
I can't think of anything that would do it and not also affect the internal data logger.
