Don't forget that we're considering having different numbers of discards for the national competition (ie, for us it's the Australian comp), vs the international competition.

The discarded months will be shown as grey on the scoring page, to make it clear which ones aren't counted.

At the moment I'm thinking of one discard for the national competition, and four for the international competition.

Thats what I'm thinking

I do not think a discard makes sense for Australia. I just rechecked 2009 for a single discard of the top 17 teams (those with no more than 1 month no session sailed). No change in order to those 17 teams. Why complicate things with a discard? Please someone else check the calcs.

So how many discards would NZ get?

I grew up in Dunedin and it gets snow some winters - I have skiied down the street I grew up on! - and even Christchurch is not that tropical either! But probably no worse than Tassie

Thats handy to know Dylan. Can it handle compressed files as most of my files are over 4MB and some go to 5MB

I bumped up the limit to 8MB. I think. Would be nice if someone could test with a file that is more than 4MB. I think I set the timeout to 6 minutes, so if your file takes longer than that to upload...

No, the site doesn't accept zipped files, though it does zip them once they are received for more compact storage, so it's not out of the question for me to add that at some future stage.

Why are your files so large? Even at one data point per second, it is quite unusual for NAVI files to be so big. Are these gpx files?

Hi Dylan, just posted my largest track of 5.4 MB and it now uploads, whereas it didn't before. Took about two minutes. That was a quick fix!! The files are SBN.

Thanks for that, Dave. I was curious to see that track. 53571 points (gasp!)

It doesn't look like 500kms on the overlay until you zoom riiiight in.

I really do like the Idea of discards and it was something I had going when we were running monthly gps comps in QLD, We had 4 div 5x10/10sec/Alpha/Nm with one discards. The Idea was to make the comp fairer for instance some sailing spots its not possible to do a NM. Its also brought the comp allot closer together between the rankings. I personally think 2 or 3 month drop for the Aussie comp maybe longer for International. I think if we had 2 or 3 month drop this year the ranking might have been quite abit different which is what you want, keeps the interest going.

just my thoughts

Guys, (Australia) if we start dropping worst, best or any months, remember this will be in conflict with the original concept, to keep as many on the water "all" year round, be it Summer, Winter Autumn Spring.
Am happy to go with whatever, so this is just a gentle reminder of what the original concept was.

to satisfy minerals comments it would be possible to nominate discards only at the end of the year.

still keeps the monthly winner but allows the overal winner to use the discard system.

holding of discard nomination till the end of year means that teams will still compete each month as they won't be able to pre-empt things.

just an idea.

Not sure I quite agree there Gestalt, I think every team would always nominate their worst month to discard, so why not let the computer do the maths of working this out? That way you get a running total, the way it is at the moment.
As you say, the monthly winner is always independant of discards -- discards only affect the yearly rankings.

Mineral, I agree with you, however the flip side to this is that some people get discouraged if they have a month with no wind "Arrr we'll never win it now!" and give up. Perhaps this will stop that line of reasoning?

I'm happy to code it in for 2010, to see how it goes.

Its a lot harder to get motivated to go windsurfing when its 10 degrees or less so perhaps Queenslanders are a bit spoiled. Its impressive reading about sailors preparing to go windsurfing in the morning darkness and the temperature is hovering around zero celcius.

An auto discard system sounds fine though to be honest I am quite happy with the existing system as its simple. However I never joined in the expectation of winning the challenge so it doesn't worry me.

Interest in the GPSTC team challenge is rising in Holland. Quite a few teams are in the making now, so I hope you Aussies will get some serious competition this year. Best wishes for 2010 to all!
