Thanks for the info. I think your right about the NE winds being the best to get speed runs. There are so many other spots in that area to try for wave and freeride sailing, like Alvadave has said at middle creek and wreck rock. There are other spots like Pancake creek & Jenny Lyn Creek ( shown in the picture that Gestalt has posted. The whole coast line there has stayed nearly untouch by development. Makes me home sick when I look at the photos. Wish I knew how to windsurf back then,quote]goldcoastmoz said...

SE - Go for the open beach
Westerly-NE - Go for the chanels but only half to full tide. Was very low tide and zig zag between the banks.

Want to try it when the NE is blowing!!!

As for a speed run - has to be the perfect alignments(wind, tide and coiincide with my days off)

Damm nice place though!!! When i go again i will take the waveboard and the freeride board

Hi Dave,
What type of board did Martin use to sail from Tannum to Agnes & back? That's a mammoth sail for a day.Have you checked out Eurimbula creek & Jenny Lyn Creeks for wave & freeride sailing? Middle & Eurimbula creeks use to have squatter shacks there, I think the Mirium Vale council made them pull them down about the end on the 80's

Middle Creek has a good set up for speed and wave sailing and handles all wind directions but is a bit of a mission, about 45 min from Agnes on dirt track and once you get there it is fair way to lug your gear as the camping area and car park is in the lee of a hill. The kite guys have been known to go up by jet ski. Wreck rock is the pick for wave sailing when its s/se. Martin Cooper from Gladstone sailed from Tannum to Agnes back in the day, not a bad downwinder.

Martin did it on slalom gear on a north easter. First time he went with another guy who apparently wasn't that good deep off the wind and they consequently spent the night from hell battling mossies and sandflies at pancake as they ran out off daylight. Second time by himself. The guy is a legend not just for his wavesailing but also for some of his sailing adventures around Gladstone.
I've really just sailed wreck, the front beach at Agnes and the point at 1770 but have scoped out middle and eurimbula. Need a boat or a ski and a sled to access everywhere.

Has Martin tried to sail from Gladstone to Masthead, Erskine or Heron Islands?
I have always wonderd whether anyone had done that yet or tried!

Hey Bilabog,

Although I can see the temptation of the Heron Harbour as a launching pad - it's a privately managed section of the reef. You need permission to even enter it with a private boat. The guys at the Resort have the right to restrict any activity in there. It's really narrow, and can have unpredictable heavy traffic.

And.... sorry to burst anyone's bubble about the beautiful lagoon opportunities at One Tree Island....but....The whole reef is restricted by Marine Parks (scientific research) - you need a permit to get with 1/2 naudical mile of the reefs edge! (Almost impossible to get a permit).


But here's some good news.... Lady Musgrave is very assessable and perfect for wind surfing/kiting.
Lady Elliot is a lot more exposed - Don't tell anyone (shhhh) but it has some of the best surfable waves on the GBR! Plus all-round better diving!!

All through the 80's One tree Island plus a big section of the reef all the way up to Heron was off limits for scientific research plus to build up fish stocks.They were really worried about the damage from people fishing & walking on the reef. Back then the word was that it was only a ten year restriction. But most people thought it would be permanent.Like you said Lady Musgrave is the best option. Masthead, Wilson and North West Islands might be worth looking into,

Wilson is ok.. the resort at Heron runs a "5 star camping" experience over there. So you can be catered for, enjoy the availability of electricity and running water, and spend all day out on the reef! Just need the $$...

Masthead and North West are awesome options too... as long as you don't mind roughing it We've done heaps of camping, diving and surfing around the whole Capricorn Bunker Group - most of the time you've got miles of reef all to yourself Need a reliable boat though, I've seen plenty of folks limping into the harbour at Heron needing help - it's a long way out if you get stuck!!

I sometimes head down to a point around 50km south of Sarina for a drive. You turn left off the Bruce Hwy, travel down a dirt road between prawn farms, go through a gate and get to this spot which has a windy side (exposed to the SEerlies) and a calm side that is sheltered by the point and faces into a large shallow bay.

On the windy side, there is a great beach which has a reef trending NE-SW almost exposed as low tide creating a fairly flat water lagoon between it and the beach. The reef extends at least 500m. Looks to be a beam to broad reach in one direction and a beam to close reach in the other in the SE wind.

There are the usual Nth Qld negatives - stingers in summer and the calm side has mangroves and looks like a great place for crocs. Camping is free but there are no facilities.

Hey Buedog,

I went to seaforth ( north Mackay) last Xmas for a few days and got a good sail in. Didn't see crocs and had huge runs to sail. Great rigging area too. Definetly going back again!

Have you sailed off Clairview slightly further down from Sarina? - Sailpilot sent me some shipping charts and there is an 8km sand bar off the northern tip of Flock Pigeon Island (or something like that) running north south. Could be a great flat water sailing spot but haven't been through there for years.

Hey Moz, you mightn'y have seen them but maybe they saw you, actually the creek there at newry has a few known well toothed residents but the open beaches at Seaforth and Haliday Bay should be OK.


Bluedog, where's the photo of?? I had a look at Carmila beach which could be OK, wouldn't mind checking out Clairview on a spring low tide, there could be a good run north of Flock Pigeon Island along 'rat tail' sandbank but I'm not sure what tide it needs.
