This is my first post on this site, having only just emigrated to Australia.
Just set my best speed to date.

GPS Display Maximum Speed: 28.6knt Garmin Foretrex 201

Conditions: 15-20knt 1metre choppy

Equipment: Starboard Freeformula 160, Tushingham Storm 6.25, Curtis Racing Fin 52cm

Details about Self: 45years old, porky 95kg, well pleased to get my pb.

Comments: Speed achieved at Shelly Beach Hervey Bay, on shore wind very lumpy,
will endeavour to break through the 30 knt barrier asap.

That's a damn respectable speed for a free formula. Bumpy water too - ripping.

Hey Ploppy,

Welcome to HB. I too live here, and sail at a place a little west of the Beach-house Pub (a place I call "Points North" due to being opposite the resort of that name, or also called "Dog Beach", cause that is where I walk my dog now and again). Great on a SE, because it comes up the Great Sandy Straits and over Urangan, and then side shore up the bay. Also the Aquarium is great too on a SE.

Gatakers Bay is the Dog's balls on a Northerly. Just no better place. You can play with the swells all day long (if you get the wind and tides right ..... damn work)

Hi Fanatic

Nice to hear from you, will certainly look out for you.
I sail with my wife, and usually launch near Shelly
Beach, and head towards Urangan pier.Have also been
from Pulgul beach (next to marina) which is nice when wind
blows up the Sandy Strait, long walk at low tide though.

Hi Ploppy,

I think that I may have met you last Saturday (29/11/08) at the launch near Shelly Beach (a bit closer to the Dayman Pier though). I was rigging a 6.7m blue and black Aerotech VMG sail, and I drive a blue Honda Jazz. You (if this was you) were with your wife and said that you would be back at about 4ish at low tide for a smoother ride, to which I replied "I would be too, but I have to take my other half to work". I sailed alone for an hour or so, and started to pack up when "Ducati" and "Seaweed Steve" just set out. Looks like they both got SWEET rides after I left (but I was happy anyways).

I have discovered a BETTER spot over the "rocky" launch near the pier. Go back down the Esplanade to Margaret Street, and the beach access across from Margarets Street is nice and sandy from the pedestrian walkway to the waters edge (I hate dem rocks, I do . Not a huge area to set up, but it works. Naturally a good launch for a NE'er or a NW'er (might be even okay for a SE, I'm not sure yet). I have to give credit to Ducati for telling me about this launch.
