Salt and Speed is the name of a new outright World Sailing Speed Record attempt over 500 metres. Provence's Alexandre Caizergues, the first man to break through the legendary 100 km/hr barrier with a speed of 54.10 knots and America's Rob Douglas, current record holder with a speed of 55.65 knots, are two top-level kitesurfers. Together they will be attempting to reach 110km/hr on France's brand new nautical arena in Salin-de-Giraud in the Bouches-du-Rh?ne department from 17 November through until 14 December 2012.

Yes, it is. That was the problem with the olympics. Windsurfing was going to replaced with kitesurfing by ISAF (International Sailing Federation). Both are sailing classes.

technically the definition of kite as per NASA = " a teathered aircraft" not a sail.

so that would make kitesurfing = wakeboarding behind an aircraft rather than a boat.

(stranger in these parts)

Does salt water actually affect speed that much?
How about temperature?
Is ice sailing still sailing?
Might there be an advantage to sailing in(/on) hot/cold fresh/salt water?

Nothing more than curious.
