My trusty Garmin finally died on the weekend.

Whats the latest reccommended GPS unit for speed sailing? GT 31 ?

Is there anything around with a large display like the Garmin Fortrex that I had? I could set the Gartmin up with full screen display so I could see actual speed while sailing. Not overly useful but interesting nevertheless!

I assume that I can set up the 31 to show max speed on the display?

Hi Des,

yeah the GT-31 is the GPS to get. Its not perfect. My old GT-11 which is very similar, finally died due to corrosion a few weeks ago. I'm sticking my GT-31 in a plastic sealed bag inside the pouch.

The Navis have Speed Genie which can display maximum speed as well as a few other speed categories. I like the 10 second speed average as that gives a better idea of what will be coming up on the screen at night.

With Tom's latest firmware, you can set up "speed genie" in a number of ways. I have mine cycling between last run max, last run 10s, session max and session 10 sec max.

OK so I have set up my new GT31 with what I think is the latest software: V1.4(B0803T) but with this I do not have the keylocked function (2 buttons pressed at the same time which I get on the V1.3(B1123) version)
Is keylocked no longer a function?

hold down the toggle button for a couple of seconds to keylock it.

Hi RSB. Yup that is what I do. On the V1.3 B1123 loaded GT31 that works fine. On the newer one I have now loaded with V1.4 B0803T software holding down the toggle or both buttons just results in the message 'ACQUIRING SIG'

Settings> Hold Key>Key Lock (default is Mark which I think sets a waypoint)

thanks Mark and Herby. I have now got that working. Funny thing is I was told about 2 years ago to lock you push in both buttons. Bit fiddly but it works.... knowing now that I only need to hold in the toggle button will make it a lot easier!

Unfortunately it also makes it easier to do it inadvertently, such as when leaning against the board when moving your mast base.
I locked mine before I was aware a key lock function existed and was wondering why I was getting no response to any buttons I pressed!

I have a small cut of neoprene glued around the toggle to stop any accidental pressing

I have a small rubber o-ring which does much the same thing. (purchased from a cheap auto spares shop)

click while in max speed, scroll up or down to "clear" click on that.
Then go to max average, click on that, same process.
Won't work while it's scrolling thru the history panes.

Or (assuming GT31 latest firmware) in speed (in the speed menu) depress the toggle button and delete all will clear all your speed genie data.
