china barriers could be boon to speed sailing

Just read that the chinese olympic dudes had built two floating barriers 20 and 22kms long to hold the algae out of the sailing venue.

maybe we can grab them cheap after the olympics to create some super speed locations.

I reckon the go would be to "organise" a large oil spill. Sailing to leeward of the containment booms would be in pretty flat water.ie some of the lighter oils would keep the water flat and the heavy crudes to windward would completely dampen waves for miles.
Might be a lot of potential to come out of China in the future.

Actually frant, you don't need the booms, just the oil spill will quell the chop out of rough water. Ships lifeboats carry (or use to in the days of open boats) drums of vegetable oil to quell the water to windward as they drifted downwind. Apparently quite effective.
