hello all if the density of these round violet jellies is about 2-3 per sqmtr. and the size is about 2-9cm in diameter and obviously very soft, would your speed runs be affected if you keep on hitting and sideswiping these buggersjust a curious just to put a thread question

i can recall while sailing dinghys on the river(swan), years ago, hitting packs of jellys that where so dense they would be like a giant blanket of orange jelly that would stop you in your tracks or knock the centre plate back up especially if the wind was light.
these packs or plagues of jellys would often appear after a period of hot light easterlys.
i cant say i have seen them(in plague) for several years now, maybe a marine biologist can explain

so i guess to answer the question yep i recon they could

i guess the size of the 'swan man o war ' can range up to a foot in diameter and weigh a couple of kilos! these are pretty soft so a good sharp speed fin would sashimi them easy enough! cant say i have seen many in recent years but they are still around and can make a nice mess if you chuck at ya mates...

here is a link to 1 of the swan jellys

www.metacafe.com/watch/710583/giant_jelly_fish_spotted_in_south_perth_western_australia/

it looks dangerous but is harmless to windsurfers...not sure about kite surfers tho?

there is another type of jelly that is far easier to throw and thats the white/translucent ones..these where rumoured to be edible....yum!..

ok it appears that this thread is about to hot up!!
here is an image of the white jellyfish
please note its a lot easier to throw as it doesnt have long tentacles like the brown one which tend to wrap around your wrist just prior to launching
they also look a lot more appetising than the brown ones as well..does any one know the legal size and bag limit for these jet propelled suckers?

Jellyfish Fondo - feeds 6 to 8 males

Ingredients:
1 kids pool
400 jellyfish (non venomous)
2 naked 45kg female wrestlers (50kg if breast augmentated)
1 carton of beer (I find Coopers Pale ale is rather refreshing with this course)

Inflate kids pool. (tip - Using a leaf blower speeds up the process by about 3 hours)
Wrestlers should be prepared - get them to insult each other over which one of them is prettier.
Whilst they are slowly warming up, roughly measure 400 jellyfish into pool.
Once heated, throw both wrestlers into pool - anyway up is okay but I find the best results occur if you lay them head to tail.
Sit back and enjoy with your mates.

can't find the pic but as best as i can describe it; it's reddish or pinkish when juveniles turn dark violet to black when mature more or less ave. size 5-12cm...not translucent round head and short stubby tentacles..the toxins are bearable as long as you don't scratch and depending on skin type[}:)]

make it simple sausage..1pint of cane or coconut vinegar and dip the heads minus the tentacles and according to the locals tastes like Jell-O vinagrette

Bugger. I've got everything (pool, leaf blower, jellyfish, naked wrestlers, mates) but not the Coopers.

PS. Not windy here, either.

Bristol,
I'll be right over with the coopers.

Nah - it was jelly fish - amazingly quite crunchy, not like jelly at all.

i knew this thread was going places!!..unlike the water depth 1
umm ttas got me thinking....you do tend to see lots of jellys in shallow..no doubt they are exploiting the ground effect?? or perhaps its just a case that the best plankton live there?

I think your wrestlers are a bit too skinny, or are they kids. Not a paedophile are you Sausage? Not that there's anything wrong with that. No hang on. There is. I think it would be more fun with fat ladies. Jelly fish and fat ladies are aesthetically complementary.
