Hey Speedsters,
Anyone who was thinking that just slalom is not for them, joining Bayside this season and enjoying the social GPS comp is another opportunity to further your windsurfing skills and enjoyment. Who knows, after a few alpha challenges you may wish to join us in the Slalom racing, using your new found speed around the corners!!
Challenges will be held from Saturday 12th September 2020 to Saturday 27th March 2021
See details below

"BAYSIDE SAILBOARD CLUB"
-GPS SPEED CHALLENGES-
..."A variety of speed challenges for all levels of ability in a variety of wind conditions."
Competition entry is free to all financial Bayside Sailboard Club members. To join the GPS competition, you need to be a registered member of ka72.com website (which is free to join), and a member of the Bayside Sailboard Club's GPS group in ka72.com (also free)
EVENTS: GPS speed challenges:- 5x10sec, 500m,alpha 500 and 1hr. Points are accumulated to determine the overall "20/21 season winners. Results for a given GPS event are based on how well a competitor does for the specified GPS category compared to the other competitors on that day.
(NOTE: overall season's winners will be determined by points accumulation, less discards in line with Windsurfing Australia guidelines. Points allocated as-FASTEST= 1 point, SECOND= 2 points, etc. A 'non sail' is worth 1 point more than number of sailors completing a challenge.
VENUE/TIME:The venue for all events is Moreton Bay, but a'suggested' area will be recommended for purely social reasons. The date and the specific speed challenge for that day will be advertised on Teamapp.com &Seabreeze.com.au (Forums- Windsurfing-Queensland) by the GPS committee on the day previous to a challenge. This 'day before notification' will be based upon the weather forecast, thus giving the best opportunity for suitable wind conditions.
Events will be conducted on Saturdays or Sundays only, maximum of one day per weekend and not on a 'slalom racing' day.
GPS/WATCH: any unit which can record data to show best:- 5x10sec, 500m, and 1hr and is able to submit the file via KA72 site. (E.g. GT31, Canmore GP102, GW52, GW60, Motion logger and some Garmin watches.)
Downloaded GPS Tracks are to to be marked "public" on ka72.com. The Bayside GPS Group on ka72.com site will display results.
Files MUST be submitted through KA72 website.
DIVISIONS: Light= bottom third of competitors by weight; Medium= middle third of competitors by weight; Heavy= top third of competitors by weight.
(NOTE:- 'extra' carried weight is counted as body weight.(Wetsuit, harness, etc do NOT count.) Sailors will be requested to self-nominate their weight to the gps committee once challenges begin. Nominated weight will stand for the whole season.
*SAFETY IS YOUR PRIORITY AT ALL TIMES; Please
do not put yours or others' safety at risk.
*impact/buoyancy vest is manditory.
*Helmet is highly recommended.
*Never sail alone.

Thanks for the question Simon 100. The simple answer to your question is 'no'.

There are a few sailors of who we are aware who prefer to wear a small amount of extra weight (4-5kg) in "extreme" conditions as they feel it helps them to more safely speedsail in those conditions. They feel it helps to keep the board on the water and the sail more controllable in gusts and therefore, less crashes. This only applies to straight line speed and certainly not to alphas and one hours. As this can give a definite advantage, it was decided by the committee that this added weight would be part of the 'self-nominated weight' for those sailors so as to try to keep the competition's weight divisions as fair as possible.
Interestingly, sailors at Luderitz all wear between 10-20kg (or more)of added weight to achieve their amazing speeds.
An interesting article on speed sailing is here, where added weight is discussed. boards.co.uk/how-to/how-fast-can-we-go-the-science-of-speed.html
PLEASE NOTE: riders must always maintain positive buoyancy!

Three challenges done to date and some very impressive results. Keep an eye out closer to the weekend, just in case #4 is called...
Don't forget that apart from trophies at the end, of the season, we have a fin up for random draw, thanks to our sponsor, Martin Love at Atomic Fins. Some info-
Atomicsurf offer a range of high quality G10 fins designed in Australia for realwindsurfers in real world conditions. The range consists of 7 fin lines....
Weapon Slalom.......A powerful Slalom fins with lots of lift and fantastic spin out resistance. It will unstick the most stubborn of boards and promote flying off the tail for superb top end speed.Weed Weapon....... The weed version of the Weapon Slalom it's very powerful and spin out resistant. 44 degree rake will shed all but the most stubborn of weed. Consider downsizing from your existing weed fin as again we stress, it's a powerful fin.Masterblaster Roughwater Slalom.......With a slightly thicker profile than the Weapon Slalom this fin has amazing grip even in the roughest of water. The narrower tip prevents the board's nose from lifting and calms things down in wild conditions. Don't underestimate its speed potential, it is a high performance fin.Fusion Freewave.....Designed to enhance the performance of the latest freestyle Wave Boards this fin is the ultimate all-rounder being fast, grippy and spin out resistant. The unique cutaway trailing edge at the base help prevent ventilation on boards such as the Severne Dyno that have a very rearward fin placement. this fin has been receiving fantastic reviews from all who have used it.Shockwave Wave Fin..... A super versatile wave fin with an emphasis on new school moves and very "slashy" maneuvers. Fast and spin out resistant this fin will work in any wave board.Side Fins....... Designed to accompany both the Fusion and Shockwave fins they are powerful and grippy while remaining low drag. Again these will suit any freestyle wave or wave board.Freestyle..... Our freestyle fins have been designed in collaboration with Melbourne's most skilled freestyle riders and benchmarked against the best freestyle fins available. The final feedback from the test riders all had a similar tone...' Don't know what I could suggest to make this fin better". We think we have something pretty special with this fin. www.atomicwindsurf.com blob:www.seabreeze.com.au/0d04fa7b-afe6-4551-bc93-fd7bb397a798blob:https://www.seabreeze.com.au/4da52179-a834-4176-852a-eccff6b88138

The 'Green Island Marathon' is on this Sunday! One hour to do as many laps as possible. Foil and fin separate start. Two RIBs. $25. Pretty much a one hour time trial so keen to get some GPS guys involved. If forecast doesn't work it'll revert back to regular slalom. Briefing at 1030 first start at 1130. May do a second for the fit guys.
