What can i say but WOW. Man did Shearwater turn it on today. Lack of wind not really a problem on the other hand lack of control. It was really really good. Stuck with my 5.5 all day but should have gone in and rigged smaller. Another 3 or 4 days of it still to come apparently yeah baby. Wet my Single Thruster for the first time today too and that was also very good. It's the first time there has been strong enough wind since i bought it. I'm totally wrecked but totally satisfied and that's a good feeling.

I loosely counted 21 of us at one stage. We outnumbered the kiters nearly 2 to 1 which is a change

Try today then averaging about 30-32 and gusting up to 40. Perfect conditions for someone that has been sailing about 5 months. Oh my f**cking god was a very common thought going through my mind today.

I come well prepared today with my 4.2 and small board for that wild wind to Shearwater to find that wind just died out completely after few runs at 2pm.

Just after few runs after sail and board replacement to be caught on 5.8m2 in 40 knots gusts.
Some says that third time is lucky but I hadn't much strength and patience left to rig small sail again.
Anyway I wonder what sails you all have been using in this gusts around 3 PM ?, maybe I just gave up too early?

I think I was chatting to you.
I changed up too, and stuck it out on the 5.4 for a bit.
It was pretty strong.

yeah we sailed around the corner at the bar - was pretty much hammering around there - the incoming tide took the edge of it and 4.7m was good. It was cross-on but there were ramps-a-plenty.

We checked out Neil St after a great afternoon session on a 5.0m on sunday but it was looking a little hairy with mast high bombs breaking over the reef and light wind on the inside...

Today was awesome, now that is wind!!!!! For the question re sail size, I keep it real simple, 1 board, 2 sails, 1 mast. The last 2 days sailed with my small sail, a 5.3 wave sail, just added a bit more downhaul and quite flat.

My opinion is too many guys over think their quiver and carry too much kit giving too many options.

Anyways top session, fingers crossed for Tuesday!

Just small technical question. My 5.8 was flapping terribly in max this qusts today. It wasn't much a matter of too much power as stability of the sail itself. Do you think that I hadn't flatten sail enough on the boom or downhaul . Now after some consideration I think I could do much more tweaking to this sail.

Yeah mate a 5.8 would have stretched those arms out today!

I used to use a 5.8 in heavy winds and just pulled as much downhaul as possible, sail looked so floppy! And had sloop much outhaul, this may help, but that would have been a struggle for sure ! The 5.3 was quite a handful in the big gusts, but awesome in between.

The 4.5 and 80l were OK on Saturday. Small gear is so much more light, fun and responsive. An extension of your body.

Hey macro i know what you mean. I was on a 4.9 NP Fusion and it was really good except when those big gusts hit it was very hard to sail. It kind of felt to me like the wind was coming through in spirals when the storm surges hit because on minute i would have huge power in the sail a second later the sail would flap as if i was heading to far up wind which i wasn't but it was only occasionally. It was the weirdest feeling because i was still planing.
I was over the other side at the sand bank when the biggest surge hit and i thought of jumping off and waiting it out but then thought what if it doesn't ease for a while so i started sailing back and there was windsurfers flying everywhere. At one stage when i was heading back over i was hooked in and planing and the whole board just blew out of the water. The wind just seemed to get under the windward rail or something and just picked the board up and it was flapping around in the air and i didn't know what the hell to do but it came back down and i spun out on landing. Luckily i pulled off the quickest water start i've ever done and got back over. It was an experience and a half.

After yesterdays "Big Monday", I can relate to the above comments re the gusts. I had a 4.6 and as I have lost a fair bit of weight due to severe Bali Belly, now 67kgs, even the 4.6 was a handful for me. Looks like today will be a similar wind pattern. Will probably try VP again!
Cheers - Enjoy it while it lasts.........
