Hello all!,
I would love to know what sails are people using for foil racing (9m). Especially in a course racing scenario, but also for slalom.

Obviously most people will use severne hgo as it is the olympic IQ foil class, but how do other sails compare to it? For example:

Gunsails gsf, Loftsails skyblade, Neilpride, Duotone
Has anyone tried both the gunsails gsf and severne hgo to compare.

Is there that much diferencie in top speed, or upwind/downwind ability that justifies the huge price difference?

I use Neil Pryde Flight Evo 7 and 8 metres race sails plus the 9m Severne HGO. The Prydes are very powerful for thier size but therefoe are a bit mopre of a handfull when outside the wind range, where as the HGO is a great sail but also can be difficult in over 20 knots. The HGO is very easy to flatten out for upwind speed whereas the Prydes still have a fair bit of knuckle in them down low.

The Formula Foil 2022 course racing world championships are being held now at Torbole on Lake Garda.
The equipment registration list including sails (excluding IQFoil competitors can be be found at this link. new.myliveregatta.com/files/138/2022%20Worlds%20Formula%20Foil%20Equipment%20Form%20%28Responses%29.pdf
Results are on the event website, foilworlds2022.formulawindsurfing.org

Some videos are on the organising club's YouTube channel. The first 30 seconds of this one is a highlight reel

Foil slalom is harder to find. Given no slalom pwa events so far, Defi Wind Gruissan last month is really the only showing.

Huge sails in the video. I'm thinking about the Patrik Foil+ but also the S2 as it comes in small sizes too

This sail is doing very well in French competitions.
But mainly smaller sizes in slalom.
2021 model was heavy compared to others.

If you are from Europe there are often people selling proper 9.0 + masts for very good prices on second hand market. Usually half price.
Unless you are racing I'd go for something like a Phantom X mk2 8.0.
Similar range as a 9.0 foil racer.
80% of the performance 50% of the effort. Better choice for 90% of sailors.
490 mast not a 550. No 60cm wide mast sleeve. Much easier to pump.

Patrik Foil + is a brilliant sail.

Not too full but creates loads of forward drive. Has loads of battens so is very stable and is super quick upwind. With an adjustable outhaul it can be made fuller but once flying, flatten it off a bit especially up wind. Probably the best sail for foiling out there.

Yeah I also have a 7m foil sail but in my experience the 9m is just way faster than a smaller sail in under 19-21 knots. Do you ever use the 7m for upwind/downwind? And with what front wing if I may ask?
