Hi all, i am Pat Sparks, Senior Transport Safety Compliance Officer, Marine, Goolwa. I have been marking fences that I considered to be a hazard in the Boggy Lake area and would like to get some feedback on what I have done from the people who use the area, you guys. I think I have finished in the boggy lake area but if you people feel there is something I have missed then please let me know.

There is a pump pick-up pipe coiled up in the water west of the area where you launch, I am taking steps to have this removed. I have been unable to get into very shallow water so fences are not marked right to the banks. Fences which are near or within thick reeds have generally not been marked, as they are not considered to be isolated hazards.

Please let me know if I need to add or remove buoys from the area, do not move or remove any buoys. I have not been able to get real close to some of the fences but others have buoys away from the visible end of the fence because there are more posts or wire under the water. This is particularly the case with the old jetty east of the radio tower.

This fence marking project is ongoing, I have maked some fences near Milang aswell as in Boggy Lake. It is intended to mark fences and hazards near Meningie and Narrung soon. Other areas of Lake Alexandrina have fences and posts into the lake from the banks, if you come across any that are not maked and you feel they should be marked please send me a message via this forum, email [email protected] or text me on 0400 696 931.

The marking is good. It gets a bit hard to spot the buoys when their is some wind and chop. A fluro orange buoy at the end of the fence would help.

There used to be a mast on the end fence post with a stream that helped up spot it however that seems to have gone walk about.

would hate to hear about a $3000 slalom/speedstick getting a pizzling from a submerged post but an injury would be sad indeed. down here all summer theres bouys around the reef breaks we sail but they are not going to hurt anything.
ive seen bouys painted up and even 1-2 foot long sticks with flags on them flapping away, maybe they would be more visible in the chop
watch out for monster sunbathing carp!!!!!!!!

I think a windsurfer had placed the flag on the fence nearest the launch beach at Mulgudawa. I didn't remove it, but flags will wear and break away. personally I have no issue with someone replacing the flag. Please don't use red or green as this could be confused as a lateral mark, yellow is the best colour.

We can only use yellow buoys to mark fences as it is an international colour for "special marks" which are marker for snag type hazards. Another type of mark is an isolated danger mark which is black and red with 2 black balls, however an isolated danger mark would imply there is safe water all around but in this case, being fences this isn't true. I might be able to get some larger buoys for some of the more hazardous fences, the ones I have used are 300mm, I might be able to get some 450mm yellow buoys.
