Some epic conditions greeted a big crew last weekend at Marrawah.
The forecast was for strong SW wind with swell building to 5 meters on Saturday and than a lighter S wind with 4-5 meters swell on Sunday.
Damien, Fluoro, Simon, Houston, Jez, Fos and Les made the drive from down south and Nick and I from up north.

Saturday morning session started with 5 to 5.5 meter sails and the waves building from waist to head high.

Fluoro hitting the lip down the beach.

Damien hitting one early on.

Simon bottom turning into an early set.

Fluoro with a trademark aerial off the lip.

After this I went in for a 4 hour session.

Starting the late afternoon session with somewhat bigger waves.
Simon on a head high set.

Fluoro

Houston bottom turning.

Fluoro going vertical into an aerial.

A few squalls came through in the late afternoon bringing some stronger wind a few more bumps on the wave faces.

Simon top turns with some spray.

Les down the beach.

Houston.

Nick Taylor on a wave during a squall.

What a magic place.

After a grand final night at the Marrawah Tavern everyone had high hopes for Bluff or BOL session Sunday morning.

Bluff didn't look very friendly with over mast high closeouts.

Although the wind seemed too offshore for Back of Lighthouse Simon and Houston ventured out, but they quickly returned back as the wind direction meant going straight through the break on the way out.

Perfect BOL wave.

After short BOL session most people started the long drive to Hobart which left only Fluoro, Nick and myself to enjoy a downright best down the line session at Greens Beach that I ever had. The conditions were challenging with almost dead offshore wind and mast high sets to get out through, but the rewards off going up and down perfectly groomed wave faces at insane speed on the way in were absolutely worth it. It took a lot of effort to come in to take some photos.

Nick on a 3/4 mast wave.

There was a lot of times when it was possible to outrun the closeout section, but not always.

Fluoro bottom turning into a closeout.

Offshore wind meant sailing out almost parallel to the beach, spending a long time in the impact zone.

Fluoro turning on a mid-size wave.

Nick with a couple of turns.

Full speed down the line.

Fluoro bottom turning into a steep face.

Nick on a mid size wave.

It was quite difficult to get out further down the beach.

Waves took some causalities on the way out. Fluoro preparing to ditch the gear and dive into the wave face. Hands are already leaving the boom.

What will happen next?

Washing machine.

The damage.

Among the closeouts there were some perfect lefts...

and some perfect rights.

All in all a top weekend and hopefully more of Marrawah trips coming up this summer.

Totally awesome shots jimo. The conditions looked probably better than last year when a few of us went up and it was gold cross-off for 3 days. As far as it is, I think it's totally worth the effort to get there. The waves at Greens are just magic. And for west coast waves, they're not too brutal. I'd love to see someone develop a wormhole that goes from Hobart to Marrawah. Well done to all who ventured up. I'm green with envy.
