The first Freerace GPS event of the season is on this Saturday. Sailors compete by sailing for a specified 1hr period at the designated location and posting their GPS tracks to KA72 where the distance covered during that 1hr period can be calculated. The winner is the sailor covering the furthest distance during that 1hr period.
The forecast is for a moderate southerly, so Mortimer Bay may be the best location for the event. A wind minimum of 15 knots is required for the event to be held.
The time and location for the event will be confirmed on Friday evening, with a briefing to be held 30 minutes prior to the start of racing.
Competitors need to be a member of WT (windsurfing-tas.tidyhq.com/public/membership_levels), wear an approved PFD and sign ON and OFF, before and after the event respectively.
It's looking like Mortimer might be the best place for tomorrow. Do we still have access to a gate key?
Thanks!
Forecast has dropped a little from this morning, with a lighter SSE now forecast early afternoon, freshening a little later in the afternoon.
Will review forecast in the morning, but at this stage, we'll aim for a briefing at 1:30pm at the Mortimer carpark (in at the launching area) for a start of the 1hr at 2pm (so be rigged and ready if the wind looks OK).
If the wind isn't getting in there, we may switch to Pipeclay Lagoon for another briefing at 2pm, but the runs will definitely be a lot shorter there and the tide will be dropping mid-afternoon.
We will need a minimum wind of 15 knots at the start and then an average of 15 knots throughout to have a race that counts.
Thanks for organising Dave, let's hope the wind is there. I won't be able to make it down today, but hope there's an event held.
The committee will need to look at calendar options for the balance of the season.
Cheers, Mort.
Unfortunately just not enough wind in the early afternoon to run the Freerace event. Was around 6-8 knots at Mortimer at 1:30pm and not looking promising for a breeze to come in there. A bit better at The Pond, with around 12 knots of wind. Forecast was for it to pick up further later, which it looks like it did, but decided to pull the pin for this event at 2pm.
Just saw this! Kind of glad there was no wind, would have been gutted to miss it. Thanks for organizing, Dave.
I am happy to announce upcoming events on Whattsapp group if someone lets me know- 90% of southerners are using it. (74 participants)
This would ensure all avenues are covered.
