I recently purchased a Garmin Fenix 5 training watch, and wore it at Sunday's Northern Wave-sailing Event. The figures were quite astounding, but now I know why I feel like I have been run over by a bus after a few hours on the water.
GENERALLY SPEAKING -
My maximum (achievable) heart rate - 190 bpm
My maximum 'calculated' heart rate - 166 bpm (220 - age - yes, very funny...)
Resting pulse - 38 bpm
I cycle quite a bit and have a pretty good handle on how hard I am working at any moment, as well as over time, and I always wear a heart rate monitor on the bike. I have tried a number of times to ride with an AVERAGE heart rate of 160 +. It is almost impossible, and I have only done it once. The figures that the Fenix collected at the Sunday session were as follows:
NORTHERN WAVE-SAILING EVENT -
Duration - 2 hours (approx.)
Maximum heart rate - 181
Average heart rate - 166
I consumed calories at a rate of just under 1200 / hour.
My heart rate dropped out of 'Zone 1' for just over 1 minute for the duration of the sail.
If I was riding my bike to these numbers, I would have hit the wall, vomited, collapsed, passed out, and probably died on the side of the road.
Now I know why we had to sign that waiver to acknowledge that we were partaking in a dangerous sport. It isn't the physical bodily damage of smashing yourself to pieces on your gear, it's the risk of complete physical breakdown.
I am left wondering if sailboarding is actually good for you, or not...
At least Kaleb, Greenie and the rest of us know that you had to work for it.
Interesting stats.
Clarence
Imagine just how much higher your average would have been if you did some wave riding with your jumping
A blown ticker I reckon Buzzy - "KABOOM" as Batman would 'say'.
If one of the venues to come has ACTUAL cross-off, as opposed to cross-on being called almost-cross-off, I may just give some of that wave-riding stuff a go - it looks dangerous though...
Ohhhhhh I can't wait to go sailing again!
I always thought Geoff was at least part machine .......the fact that he can download all his data though some fandangled computer interface is all the confirmation I need!!
I got this photo of the moment that both Buzzy's hands were torn completely off while trying to back loop.....undeterred he velcroed the bloodied stumps back on to the boom and kept sailing.
Back loops, I give up in shame. Very impressed and jealous with Clarkie's efforts.
He can certainly take the title of first Tasmanian to be consistently landing back loops. we have had a few stop overs living in Tassie over the years that have been very competent at Backie's, but none that can claim to be local's. There are a few in the state that can pull clean Push Loops in the right conditions, but they have not mastered the level of control needed for a Back Loop. Lot's have claimed to land them, but no evidence has ever been produced.
I think those heart rates prove Clarkie's commitment on Sunday.
Nice work sir, you have set the bar up another notch
p.s. If anyone finds a set of hands on the north coast, can you please p.m. me, cheers
Geez you must be fit, resting heart rate of 38
That's what I thought!
The Himalayan Monks have a resting beat of 25, free divers 15-20
big jumping windsurfers mostly have 30- 40 so whats the problem
Time to TURBOCHARGE the Pacemakers and prepare for a 12,000 calorie-burn weekend.
North coast madness for the next three days - YEEEEHAAAAAAAA!!!!
Pick a move - make it happen.
Saturday afternoon in the waves for me and possibly a sail at Lagoon on Sunday.
